SHOWDOWN IN OTTAWA LOOMS
Jermaine Campbell put his stamp on Ottawa's next game as the veteran scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in a 78-71 win over the Ryerson Rams Saturday. Marko Jovic added 15 points for the Gee-Gees, while OUA rebounding leader Igor Bakovic scored 15 points and had 17 rebounds. Toronto (15-6) will finish third in the East and host one quarter-final. The Blues lost 69-62 to the Ravens Saturday as Osvaldo Jeanty led the three-time CIS champs with 19 points. Mike Williams had 20 for Toronto on a brilliant shooting night - he hit seven of eight shots from the floor and six of seven at the line.
The York Lions and Laurentian Voyageurs will meet in the other quarter-final after finishing fourth and fifth respectively in the East. York (13-8) won both of its games this week, beginning with an 83-76 decision over Queen's Friday. Tut Ruach had 20 points for the Lions, while Rohan Steen added 15 points and nine rebounds. Simon Mitchell had 20 for Queen's. Dan Eves was one of six Lions to score double figures as they manhandled the Paladins 95-39 Saturday. Eves had 15, to go along with 10 rebounds and seven assists. Paul Kovacs led the Voyageurs with 10 points and seven rebounds as they downed RMC 71-33 Friday. Brody Bishop helped Laurentian make it a sweep of the Kingston teams as he scored 18 points in a 65-56 win Saturday night. Matt Brown had 15 points and eight boards for the home team, while Cameron Eby paced the Gaels with 14.
There's a race in the West as just four points separate the first-place McMaster Marauders (15-5) and the third-place Brock Badgers (13-7) with two games to play in the regular season. The Guelph Gryphons (14-6) have a shot at top spot, as well. McMaster built some momentum this week after beating the Waterloo Warriors 86-79 Wednesday. Martin Ajayi led a balanced Mac attack with 16 points and seven rebounds, while four other Marauders scored double digits, including Toms Lokmanis (13 points, eight rebounds). Michael Davis led the Warriors with 16 points, while Chris Edwards had 15 points and 10 boards. The No. 8 Marauders then pounded the Windsor Lancers 90-69, thanks to a 26-point, 13-rebound performance from veteran big man Adam Steiner.
Guelph beat the Western Mustangs 66-49 Wednesday, led by guard Nick Pankerichan's 14 points and eight rebounds. But the Gryphons real test came Saturday as they pulled out a crucial 65-63 win over Waterloo Saturday in Guelph. The Warriors, led by Gerard Magennis's 21 points, were up at the half 34-30. But Guelph got 25 points, nine rebounds and four assists from big man JR Bailey and rallied in the second to secure the huge win.
Brock hung around the top of the division with back-to-back wins over the Lakehead Thunderwolves. Scott Murray had 22 points and Kevin Stienstra added 17 points and 17 rebounds in the Badgers' 73-61 win Friday. Stienstra surpassed the Brock record for most rebounds in a career, previously held by Gord Wood with 1,520. Kiraan Posey was sensational for Lakehead, scoring 25 points and hauling down nine rebounds. In the rematch, Brock rookie Mike Kemp lit the Wolves up for a career-high 32 points, shooting 14-for-17 from the floor, which included makes on all three three-point attempts.
In other OUA action, Windsor beat Laurier 72-65 Wednesday, Carleton defeated the Rams 79-61 Friday and Laurier beat Western 71-67 Saturday. The West will come down to a pair of games this week - Guelph plays at McMaster this Wednesday and the Marauders then travel to Brock Saturday.
