VOYAGEURS SOCCER PLAYER ALISIC WINS P.E.I. PLAYER OF THE YEAR AWARD
Alisic, played in nine regular season games for the Voyageurs tallying the lone goal in a 1-0 win over Queen's in Kingston, during a weekend which kick-started the Voyageurs season where they finished third in the OUA East Division. Alisic also found the back of the net in the OUA East Quarter-Final against Queen's in Sudbury, a game the Laurentian men would end up winning 2-0 and advancing to play the University of Toronto Varsity Blues in the OUA East Semi-Final.
Anyone under the age of 18 and in the P.E.I. youth soccer system is eligible to win the award, meaning Alisic outperformed approximately 2,000 other junior soccer players in the province. In 2008, Alisic played for the Winsloe West Royalty, a club team in P.E.I., the under-18 provincial team as well as the Voyageurs. For the Royalty, he netted nine goals in only 12 games, which led the team and was second in the entire league. Alisic was a force scoring a hat-trick in a 3-1 victory in the provincial under-18 final, enabling his team to advance to nationals. While donning his provincial colours, Alisic scored four times, including three game-winners as P.E.I. posted a record of 3-1-1 good enough for fifth place. Alisic finished second in scoring in the tournament.
"It is definitely a great accomplishment and it's something that will motivate me for years to come," said a humble Alisic. "That being said, the players that I have played with and coaching that I have received have contributed greatly to my success."
Voyageurs head coach Carlo Castrechino was proud of his newcomer. "I was very happy to hear that Davor was nominated for the award and to win it is certainly a great accomplishment. He is well respected by his teammates and it has been a pleasure for me to be his coach. He was a nice surprise this year for us and we are certain that he will continue to be a valuable player for Laurentian for years to come."
Alisic also left great impressions on the P.E.I. Soccer Association. "You have a good kid over there, as a player and as a person," said Executive Director Peter Wolters.
Alisic will now turn to the books for the remainder of the school year. His teammates and he will also participate in an indoor soccer league while the snow covers the soccer pitch in Sudbury. The Voyageurs soccer team will look to continue their success in 2009 and improve on a third place finish in the OUA East Division this year.
