VOYAGEURS CLINCH HOME PLAYOFF GAME IN M-SOCCER
The first half started off slow with even possession and very little scoring chances for both teams. The teams struggled to find their footing on a slick field due to a steady down pour. The only chance the Voyageurs had for a potential goal in the half was when Tony Tagliafierro (Sudbury, Ont.) took a free kick just shy of the 18-yard box, narrowly missing the crossbar, making it a scoreless game entering halftime.
Momentum picked up for both teams in the second half as they battled hard in the rain. Both teams defence was solid making it difficult to get the go ahead marker. Laurentian was able to capitalized on a corner kick off the foot of Derek Lubertino (Hamilton, Ont.) leading to a header made by Sauvé that found it's way to the back of the Lakers net in the 52nd minute of play. This was all the Voyageurs needed, coming away with a 1-0 win.
"I was really happy with our team defence, both teams battled hard and we we're fortunate to get the bounce and get the one up to win" said Laurentian head coach Carlo Castrechino.
Wednesday's win also clinched the Riley Gallo Cup for the Laurentian Voyageurs.
The Voyageurs have a couple days to prepare for their second last regular season game against the Carleton Ravens who head into the weekend ranked first in the country. The game is set for Sat., Oct. 18 at 12 p.m. on the Laurentian Soccer Field.
