OUA M-SOCCER ROUNDUP: YORK TAKES TOP SPOT
The men entered the weekend with two must-win games to clinch the top spot. On Saturday they faced the Mustangs, the only team that stood in front of them in the standings. York fell behind by a goal early in the game but Adrian Pena (Woodbridge, Ont.) evened the score at 1-1 just a couple of minutes later. The game would stay that way until the 60th minute, when Douglas Sereti (Toronto, Ont.) netted the go-ahead goal. York would hang on from there to clinch the victory 2-1 and move into first place in the division.
The Lions claimed top spot for good on Sunday with a crushing 7-0 victory over the Windsor Lancers. The team spread the scoring around as six different goal-scorers contributed to the victory. Jarek Whiteman (Brampton, Ont.) netted a pair while Francesco Bruno (Toronto, Ont.), Stefan Zlatanov (Scarborough, Ont.), Sereti, Branko Majsiorovic (Toronto, Ont.) and Pena added one apiece. Rookie goalkeeper Alim Karim (Scarborough, Ont.) was a wall in front of the net to record his fourth shutout of the season.

LAURIER 4, WINDSOR 1
LAURIER 2, WESTERN 1
LONDON, Ont. – The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawk men's soccer team went into their game against Western being able to control their own destiny. A win would secure second spot in the OUA West and a first round bye. A loss would have them hosting a quarter-final. The 2-1 win over the Mustangs give the Hawks a brief break before hosting a OUA semi-final game.
The Mustangs opened the scoring in the game with Scott Cameron (Pickering, Ont.) scoring just three minutes into the game. The goal would be the only one of seven shots that would slip by Golden Hawk netminder Yousef El-Abbar (Kitchener, Ont.) for the remainder of the game. Western went into half time break with a 1-0 lead.
The second half was all Laurier as Adriaan Reurink (Amsterdam, Netherlands) and Spencer Cawker (Mississauga, Ont.) would score for the Hawks. First, Reurink scored at the 63 minute mark and then Cawker at the 74 minute mark to earn the win and the first round bye for the team.
Now Laurier will wait to see who the winner of the Western-Guelph OUA West quarter-final will be and will face them on Sat., Oct. 25 at 1 p.m. at Alumni Field.

GUELPH 3, MCMASTER 1
GUELPH, Ont. - The Guelph Gryphons men's soccer team defeated the McMaster Marauders 3-0 on Sunday at Alumni Stadium. Jurgen Koehler (Guelph, Ont.) surprised McMaster when he pounded the ball 30 yards to get the Gryphons on the scoreboard in the first five minutes of the game.
Guelph scored again when captain Francesco Luzi (Guelph, Ont.) netted the ball into the left hand corner at 35:00. Three minutes later, midfielder Stephen Johnstone (Ottawa, Ont.) made a picture-perfect cross from the right wing to Koehler who headed the ball into the net for his second goal of the game.
In the second half, McMaster was able to find the net when Justin Vespa (Ancaster, Ont.) scored off a penalty kick.
One goal was all McMaster could muster. McMaster was unable to score again because of the solid defensive playing of David Canavan (Niagara Falls, Ont.), Connor Avery-Cooper (Barrie, Ont.), Alexander Jakimtschuk (Mississauga, Ont.) and John Ilunga (Lubumbashi).
The Gryphons finished the season in sixth place in the OUA West and will travel to London to take on the third place Western Mustangs this week on Oct. 22 in an OUA playoff game.

TORONTO 2, RMC 1
TORONTO 1, QUEEN'S 1
TORONTO, Ont. - The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's soccer team finished the 2008 OUA regular season with a win and a tie. The men just got by the RMC Paladins, 2-1, and tied the Queen's Gaels 1-1 on Sunday.
With these outcomes, the No. 6 men finish in second place.
The team will have a bye in the first round of the playoffs and will host OUA quarter-finals next weekend at Varsity Centre. The men will host the highest remaining seed after the first round of playoff action on Sat., Oct. 25 at 6 p.m.
Third-year striker Nordo Gooden (Kingston, Jamaica) put the Blues on board against the Paladins in the 17th minute of the match. David Bigcanoe (London, Ont.) answered back for RMC and the game remained tied 1-1 after 45 minutes.
Things were looking grim in the second half as neither team could bury a go-ahead goal. However, Blues captain Dustin Chung (Toronto, Ont.) found a way past Paladins goalkeeper Jeremy Whalen (Halifax, N.S.) in the 87th minute to put the Blues ahead and secure the 2-1 victory.
On Sunday, Queen's opened up the scoring early as Justin Vermeer (Grimsby, Ont.) scored for the Gaels in the sixth minute. The Blues were unable to put one on the board and trailed 1-0 at the midway point of the match.
The second half went back-and-forth until Neil D'Silva (Mississauga, Ont.) was able to put the ball past the Queen's goalkeeper in the 86th minute. Nothing else would develop in the final four minutes of the match, and the game would end in a 1-1 draw.

TRENT 1, LAURENTIAN 0
SUDBURY, Ont. - The Laurentian Voyageurs men's soccer team fell 1-0 to the Trent Excalibur on Sunday afternoon for their final regular season game. The Voyageurs were hoping to get another win under their belt but Excalibur player Keegan Muldoon (Bridgeworth, Ont.) was able to tally for his team. Andre Gomes and Dave Sczcepeniak played in goal in Scott Cliff's absence.
Trent and Laurentian saw their fair share of possession in the first half. The teams had equal opportunities to get the go ahead marker however none of these opportunities were realized. Sczcepeniak (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) played the first half of the game in net, making a total of three saves, as did Trent's keeper Josip Bosnjak (Pickering, Ont.). As the minutes were ticking away in the half, neither team was able to find the back of the net, leaving the game scoreless going into halftime.
The Voyageurs decided to give Gomes (Woodbridge, Ont.) his chance in net in the second half. For the first 25 minutes of the half, Laurentian put continuous pressure on Trent. The Excalibur were able to turn the tables around in the 80th minute with a goal netted by Muldoon (Bridgenorth, Ont,). The Voyageurs continued to play aggressively searching for their chance to tie the game but we're unable to do so. The game ended 1-0 in Trent's favour.
"It was a tough battle. Both teams worked hard," said head coach Carlo Castrechino. "We missed way too many chances today; they were able to capitalize on the chance they got."
The Voyageurs will have a few days to shake off their loss and prepare for their home playoff game starting at 12 p.m. Wed., Oct. 22.
