MCGILL CLAIMS OLD FOUR TITLES
The Martlets took home the women's gold medal with a 3-1 win over the host Varsity Blues. McGill forward Magalie Kolker (North Vancouver, B.C.) opened up the scoring when she capitalized on a Blues turnover to put McGill up by one. The Blues were struggling until Juliana Bergin (Barrie, Ont.) put one past Martlet goalkeeper Anne-Catherine Huot (Quebec City, Que.) to tie the game in the 42nd minute of the match.
McGill came out on fire as Alexandra Morin-Boucher (St. Gabriel deBrandon, Que.) buried the go-ahead goal for her squad early in the second half. Blues goalkeeper Leslie Kennedy (Albert Bridge, N.S.) made numerous key saves but could not stop Kolker from scoring her second goal of the game to secure the gold-medal win and fifth-consecutive Old Four tournament title for the McGill Martlets.
On the men's side, the McGill Redmen came away with a 2-0 victory over the Varsity Blues. Despite excellent goalkeeping from Luciano Lombardo (Scarborough, Ont.), Redmen forward Mike Stein (Toronto, Ont.) found a hole to put McGill up 1-0.
Blues captain Dustin Chung (Toronto, Ont.) led a strong defensive corps but could not prevent Yohan Capolungo (Vallen, France) from burying McGill's second goal, with authority, securing a victory and the second title for McGill of the day. Goalkeeper Oliver Boulva (Town of Mt. Royal, Que.) was solid in net and earned the shut out for the Redmen.
In bronze medal action, the Western Mustangs defeated the Queen's Gaels 2-1 in the women's match.
The Gaels started things off early when Mary Kampman's (Penticton, B.C.) wild shot bounced off Mustang goalkeeper Keltie Brigham (Regina, Sask.) and found its way into the net. Courtney Lambert (Burlington, Ont.) answered back for the Mustangs on a penalty kick to even the score at 1-1.
Queen's goalkeeper Chantal Marson (London, Ont.) made some key saves for her squad but was unable to stop Western midfielder Chantal Blais (Toronto, Ont.) from scoring the go-ahead goal. The Mustangs held their own for the rest of the game to come away with the bronze medal.
The Western men's team also claimed the bronze, defeating the Queen's Gaels 1-0. The Mustangs got on the board in the fourth minute when Nicholas Mavrikos (Victoria, B.C.) scored what would be the only goal of the game.
Western goalkeeper Kosta Viglatzis (Toronto, Ont.) earned the shut out for his squad, making some vital saves in the second half.
