MCMASTER, QUEEN'S TO HOST CIS VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS
Sherbrooke and Laval both secured three of the 13 events up for grabs. Sherbrooke was the selection committee's choice for the 2010 CIS cross country championships, the 2011 track and field national meet and the 2013 women's volleyball tournament, while Quebec City will welcome cross country in 2011, men's soccer in 2012 and men's volleyball in 2013.
Other successful bidders announced on Thursday include Victoria, a double winner with men's soccer heading west in 2011 and women's soccer following in 2012, as well as Calgary (swimming 2011), McGill (women's soccer 2011), Manitoba (track and field 2012), McMaster (women's volleyball 2012) and Queen's (men's volleyball 2012), all set to hold one CIS event.
"CIS student-athletes are the big winners in this round of bid selections in that the caliber of the bids were outstanding," says CIS Chief Executive Officer, Marg McGregor. "The upcoming championships promise to be student-athlete centered and set new standards of excellence."
"It is exciting that we will be showcasing our CIS women's volleyball in Ontario for the first time in over 15 years, and we are also thrilled to take our men's volleyball championship to Queen's and its brand new facilities for the first time ever in 2012," McGregor added.
Sherbrooke has hosted the CIS cross country races twice in the past, in 1985 and 2001. A national powerhouse in track and field with five CIS men's team titles in the past 13 years, the Vert & Or previously organized the championships in 1984, 1989, 2000 and 2001. The school hosted the country's top women's volleyball players on one occasion, back in 1988.
Laval has become a destination of choice for the CIS cross country meet, which took place in Quebec City last fall as well as in 2006. The nation's top runners also got together in "La Vieille Capitale" back in 1988.
While the Rouge et Or will be hosting its first CIS men's soccer tournament three years from now, Laval has organized the men's volleyball national tourney – which it has won three times – a record 10 times in the past (1972, 1975, 1984, 1991, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2004, 2005, 2008), including six of the last 11 years.
Four-time CIS men's soccer champions and one-time women's soccer titlists, the Victoria Vikes previously hosted the men's championship in 1975 and 1999 and the women's competition in 1998 and 2006.
The CIS swim meet will return to Calgary for the first time since 1973. The Dinos are reigning CIS women's champions and 13-time men's national champions.
McGill hosted the inaugural CIS women's soccer tournament in 1987 and also welcomed the event in 1993 and 2003. The Martlets have reached the gold-medal final on five occasions but are still looking for that elusive first Gladys Bean memorial trophy.
Seven-time CIS men's track and field champions, the Manitoba Bisons will host the national meet for the sixth time. The event took place in Winnipeg in 1988, 1990, 1992, 1995 and 2005.
McMaster hosted CIS women's volleyball back in 1979. The tourney was last held in Ontario in 1996, at the U of T.
Queen's will be a first-time host of the country's best university men's volleyball players in 2012. The school's state-of-the-art Queen's Centre is set to open in the fall of 2009.
