OUA W-VOLLEYBALL ROUNDUP: NO. 9 LIONS LOSE FIRST GAME OF SEASON
For just the fourth time all season, the Lions fell behind in the first set, and like the other three times, York fought back to tie the game 1-1. But the Lions lost a tough third set, trailing 2-1 for the first time since the season opener against Western on Oct. 31. They were not able to rally, as the Marauders handed York its first loss since the 2008 OUA quarterfinal against Ottawa nearly a year ago.
Third-year middle Sarah Kiernan (Hamilton, Ont.) had eight kills, five aces and one block to lead the Marauders. Teammates Kaila Janssen (Oshawa, Ont.) and Larissa Puhach (Burlington, Ont.) each had seven kills in the victory.
For the Lions, rookie leftside Thinesa Sriskandarajah (Scarborough, Ont.) had 13 kills in a losing effort, while senior outside Candice Paulsen (Scarborough, Ont.) had 12 kills.
York had clinched first place in the OUA East Division prior to the game, will host an OUA quarterfinal playoff game on Feb. 14.

WATERLOO 3, WESTERN 0
WATERLOO, Ont. - The Western Mustangs (15-4) had a tough night on the road as the Waterloo Warriors (12-7) swept the Mustangs in three straight sets at PAC on Saturday.
After a close first set, the Mustangs could not gain momentum as the Warriors defeated the Mustangs 24-26, 20-25, 17-25.
Leading the way for the Warriors was Megan McKenzie (South Surrey, B.C.) with 13 points and 10 kills.
A bright spot for the Mustangs was Sarah Lowry (Calgary, Alta.) who had nine points, eight kills, and seven digs on the night.
Melissa Mann (London, Ont.) had 17 digs and three kills, while Andrea Ruste (Edmonton, Alta.) added 15 digs.

BROCK 3, OTTAWA 0
OTTAWA, Ont. - The Brock Badgers women's volleyball (14-5) team ended the regular season with a 3-0 sweep (25-16, 25-21, 25-19) over the Ottawa Gee-Gees on the road on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, the Badgers tie the school record for victories in a single season with 14.
Leading the Badgers offence was junior Erin Mercer (Rockwood, Ont.) who recorded 11 kills and 11 digs for the double-double. Senior Shauna Peddle (Stoney Creek, Ont.) contributed with seven kills and two block solos. Junior Heather Potts (Nepean, Ont.) rounded out the Brock leaders finishing with six kills and two block solos in the victory.
The Badgers finish in third place in the OUA West Division with 28 points, two points back of McMaster and Western who finished with identical 15-4 records.

TORONTO 3, RMC 0
KINGSTON, Ont. - With second place in the OUA East Division on the line, the Toronto Varsity Blues women's volleyball handily defeated the RMC Paladins 3-0 on Saturday.
Toronto dominated the entire game, taking it in three straight sets 25-8, 25-18, 25-11.
Toronto's Caley Venn (Bowmanville, Ont.) led all players with 12 kills, while Heather Bansley (Waterdown, Ont.) had 11. Dianne Burrows (Richmond Hill, Ont.) tallied nine kills and a game-high 12 digs and Shannon Rossall (Calgary, Alta.) garnered four serving aces in the victory.
Alexandria Daymond (Ottawa, Ont.) and Melissa McCoy (Kingston, Ont.) led the Paladins with five kills apiece.
The Blues two victories this weekend, combined with the Ottawa Gee-Gees loss to the Brock Badgers, left them tied with Ottawa for second place in the OUA East Division with identical 12-7 records.

QUEEN'S 3, RYERSON 2
KINGSTON, Ont. - The Queen's Gaels women's volleyball team finished up the 2008-09 regular season on Saturday, narrowly defeating the Ryerson Rams 3-2 inside Bartlett Gymnasium.
Katie Matthews (Aurora, Ont.) and Colleen Ogilvie (Calgary, Alta.) produced 21 points each in the victory as the Gaels captured their 10th win of the season (21-25, 25-23, 25-15, 23-25, 15-13). Ogilvie had a game-high 17 kills, recording two aces and two blocks while Matthews had a game high nine blocks, along with 11 kills and three aces for Queen's.
Setter's Kristin Collins (Whitby, Ont.) and rookie Julie Lockwood (Calgary, Alta.) spilt the duties for the Gaels producing 20 and 33 assists respectively.
Ryerson challenged the Gaels all night, which saw three sets finish with a two point difference including the final set. Kasandra Bracken (Sherwood Park, Alta.) led in scoring for the Rams finishing with five kills, six blocks and an ace for 12 points.
Queen's finishes in fourth place in the OUA East Division with a record of 10-9 and will challenge the first place York Lions in the OUA quarterfinals on Saturday.
