OUA W-VOLLEYBALL ROUNDUP: NO. 8 LIONS CLINCH FIRST PLACE
The Lions have clinched first place in the East Division with their perfect record, while the Gee-Gees hold on to second place at 12-7 on the season.
The game had a vociferous start, with a lot of spectators coming out to show their support for the team in their last regular-season home game – especially for senior's night as veterans Angela Frawley (Sudbury, Ont.), Candice Paulsen (Scarborough, Ont.) and Antonia Stathakos (Brampton, Ont.) were playing their last regular-season game on home court as they graduate later this year.
The first set was a tight contest as neither team was able to gain more than a two-point lead. However, the Lions pulled away late in the first set, going on a 6-1 run to lead 22-16. Despite the Gee Gees rallying back, the Lions were able to close off the set 25-22.
The Lions dominated the second set as the Gee Gees buckled under constant pressure from the Lions offence, and an exclamation point-like kill from Paulsen meant that the Lions took the second set 25-16.
York continued its momentum in the third, with the Lions maintaining at least a three-point all set to take the set 25-20 and win the match.
The crowd gave the graduating players a standing ovation to round off a great evening for the Lions.
The Lions will finish off their regular season on the road next weekend when they take on the Guelph Gryphons on Friday evening at 6 p.m. and the McMaster Marauders in Hamilton on Saturday at 6 p.m.
