MARAUDERS FALL TO DINOS IN CIS WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL QUARTERFINAL
The University of Calgary Dinos move on to Friday’s semi-final match at 8:00pm (AST) where they will face the winner of the No.7 ranked UNB Varsity Reds and No.2 Montreal Carabins.
The Marauders will play the losers on the consolation side at 3 pm AST.
Holly Harper and Lauren Perry led the stats for Calgary with nine and ten kills respectively on the way to the Dinos win. Forth year right side Holly Harper with ten points and nine kills took Calgary’s player of the match honors. While McMaster’s Carly Welch took home the player of the match for the Marauders with five kills and six points.
The first set was back and forth with both teams playing with high energy. The first technical timeout had Calgary up by two (8-6). They continued to play strong and led by Holly Harper (Lumsden, SK.), Laura Wilson (Calgary, AB), Willemina Stikker (Lacombe, AB) they entered the second technical time out up sixteen to eleven. McMaster tried to come back towards the end of the set and pulled within two points (22-20) but the Dinos refused to let them get any closer and a big kill by Laura Wilson sealed the set for the Dinos 25-20.
The second set again opened with both teams trading points and a great kill by Lauren Perry (Taber, AB) had the Dinos up eight to seven at the first technical timeout. McMaster fought well and traded rallies with Calgary as the set progressed. McMaster’s blocking was superb led by Kaila Janssen (Whitby, ON.), and Sarah Kieman (Hamilton, ON) but the Dinos repetitive hammering eventually broke through and opened up the game. Calgary took the set 25-13.
McMaster came out strong in the third and quickly went up four to one. Calgary however shook it off and answered back with five consecutive points. The Marauders hitting was solid after the first technical time but the Dinos proved their grit and battled through with some great hitting and blocking of their own leading 16-14 at the second technical timeout. McMaster responded with a massive kill from Kaila Jannsen who had six kills in the match. Not to be out done Calgary’s Julie Young answered right back with one of her own. After which the Dinos were not to be caught and Lauren Perry closed it with set point. 25-19
