McMaster 3, Guelph 0
The McMaster Marauder women's volleyball team (8-3) welcomed the Guelph Gryphons (5-6) into the familiar territory of the Arthur Burridge Gymnasium Friday night, where a finely tuned offense went to work orchestrating the Marauders third straight shutout victory at home. The Marauders, who are undefeated in their last five games, improved their season record to 8-3 as they now sit in second place in the OUA West.
The Gryphons did an excellent job of limiting the effectiveness of a steady barrage of Marauder offense digging up 46 attacks compared to the home side's 37. Their ability to counterattack with a slim 14 errors all game resulted in close scores in the first two sets. However McMaster stayed the course and blew things open in the third set to end the match (25-21, 25-23, and 25-16).
The Marauders owned the net all night blocking a total of 14 attacks. Sarah Kiernan (Hamilton, ON) out performed the entire Gryphons team in this category with 6 blocks on her own. Kiernan also had a game high 13 points to go along with 4 digs.
McMaster's Carly Welch (Hamilton, ON) paced all players with 10 kills and an ace, as well as 6 digs and 2 blocked attacks to give her 12 points. Teammate Jackie Sauve (Penetangueshene, ON) landed 8 kills and had 6 digs and 2 blocks as well.
Jennifer Holt (Hamilton, ON) had a high kill rate landing 50 per cent of her attacks, but had only 2 kills in the match. She left the bulk of the attacking to other Marauders by setting up much of the offense instead, accumulating a game high 26 assists in the process.
Sarah Pardy led the Gryphons with 12 points, nine kills and 4 digs. Melissa McGinn helped her out with 19 assists and 8 digs. Heather Lawrence had a game high 11 digs to pace Guelph's skilled back court.
