OUA M-SOCCER ROUNDUP: GAELS EARN SHUT OUT OVER VOYAGEURS TO TIE STANDINGS
The Voyageurs and Gaels would battle for possession in the midfield throughout the first half, which would not lead to many scoring opportunities for either team. David Capstick (Ottawa) caused the first trouble for the Gaels as he took a hard low shot from 40 yards out that troubled Martin-Courtright as he bobbled the ball, but he was still able to make the save.
Derek Lang (Sudbury, Ont.) would get a great opportunity off a corner, but his shot was put right into the arms of Martin-Courtright. Laurentian looked to have taken the lead in the 28th minute as Rudy Muteba (Sudbury, Ont.) chipped the keeper, but it was called back on an offside.
This seemed to give the Gaels confidence as Andrew Nador (Kingston, Ont.) took a long throw that found Vermeer's head, which was put into the back of the net in the 32nd minute. Queen's would score again in the dying seconds of the half as Coyle wonderfully took the ball in the middle of the midfield and took a long shot from 30-yards out that curled around the outstretched hand of Cliff to give Queen's a 2-0 lead.
Laurentian would look to rebound from the deficit as Sudbury natives Brent Huffels and Andrew Piccinetti had several opportunities to chip into the lead turned away by Martin-Courtright. Jordan Brooks (Angus, Ont.) would counter back and hit the post in the 50th minute. Laurentian then would push for some sort of an offensive effort, but Queen's would focus on defence as their midfield shifted into a more defensive approach. Coyle would have another crack at goal from distance for Queen's in the 74th minute but he was turned away by Cliff this time. Queen's would hold onto the lead and send Laurentian packing with their third loss of the season.
"We started off too slow and we can't pull that against good teams," said Laurentian head coach Carlo Castrechino. "The red card did not help in the second half and we had to play short-handed. We are going to work on ball possession for next weekend."
CARLETON 3, TRENT 2
At Carleton, the Carleton Ravens (5-4-2) defeated the Trent Excalibur 3-2 in a thrilling soccer match played at Ravens' Field.
The Ravens opened the scoring seven minutes in as veteran midfielder Peter Manginas (Belleville, Ont.) put Carleton ahead. The lead lasted less than a minute as Trent (2-7-1) tied the match off the kickoff on a goal by Keegan Muldoon (Bridgenorth, Ont.). Carleton would regain the lead when rookie midfielder Joey Kewin (London, Ont.) would score his fourth of the season, at the 32nd minute of play. Not to be outdone, Trent would tally three minutes later on a goal by Cromwell Damile (Toronto) to send the match into the break tied at two.
On the second half both teams had opportunities to regain the lead but a key substitution with 30 minutes remaining lifted the ream as second year striker Caki Simrooglu (Izmir, Turkey) made his 2009 debut coming off the injured reserve list. The international business major wasted no time in delighting the crowd by notching his first goal of the 2009 campaign in the 73rd minute of play.
Carleton's defence led by Tyler Morgenson (Ottawa) making his first career OUA start in the Ravens net, controlled the remaining minutes of the match to secure the victory and set up the two meaningful matches with Queen's over the next two weekends.
Simrooglu was named player of the game for Carleton, for his match winning goal and sparking the Ravens to victory. The Excalibur's Thaddeus Bolton (Bowmanville, Ont.) a fourth-year striker was named Trent's player of the game.
RMC 2, NIPISSING 2
At Nipissing, the RMC Paladins and host Lakers battled to a 2-2 draw on Saturday.
Thomas Duncan (Lindsay, Ont.) and Jeff Portugues (North Bay, Ont.) both scored for the Lakers who now have a record of 2-4-4 on the season.
RMC's Ryan Hogg (Halifax) and Thomas Pugh (Portage Lake, N.S.) both hit pay dirt. The Paladins are still looking for their first win of 2009 with a 0-7-2 record.
