MACMILLAN SCORES GAME-WINNER FOR GRYPHONS VERSUS MARAUDERS IN MEN'S SOCCER
The Gryphons record moves to (1-0-0) while the Marauders are left with (0-1-0).
Guelph received their only goal from the powerhouse Colin MacMillan (Newmarket, Ont.) only 12 minutes into the first half. McMaster was unable to score a goal, although a gallant effort was put forth throughout the game.
In the opening half the field was dominated by Guelph's players, continually forcing the plays into McMaster's end. McMillan pressured McMaster's defence with aggressive pursuits and attempted shots on net. Guelph's goalie Adam Jovanovic (Kitchener, Ont.) made an impressive save 20 minutes into the first half, keeping Guelph's record clean.
Robbie Murphy (Ottawa, Ont.) was presented with a nearly open net in the 38th minute and he fired hard, but shot wide and missed. Daniel Veloce (Burlington, Ont.) was subbed-in and drove the ball hard hoping to tie up against the Gryphons, but he was quickly intercepted by Dave Canavan (Niagara Falls, Ont.).
By the second half tension began to build, with coaches and teammates alike becoming increasingly agitated. Murphy continued to drive the ball fearlessly into the opposing teams end, and McMillan took on all three defencemen at once and fired – going wide. McMaster responded by attacking offensively with Ivan Stojakovic (Stoney Creek, Ont.) as he shot towards Guelph's goal, but Canavan intercepted once again.
Gryphon's offence dominated once more in the late second half, and with smart plays and great passes they manipulated the opposing defence giving way for numerous shots on net, although none successful. The last three minutes of the game were truly suspenseful but Guelph's determined defence and goalie averted any last minute goals. Gryphons finished strong with a 1-0 win.
The Gryphons play the Brock Badgers next on Sept. 13 at 3:15 p.m. at home. The Marauders travel to York to face the Lions in a 3:15 p.m. start.
