OUA M-SOCCER ROUNDUP: LANCERS UPSET NO. 2 LIONS
Coach Steve Hart's squad got a pair of goals from Michael Watson (Belle River, Ont.) and markers from Ryan Wise (St. Thomas, Ont.) and Arlo Hemkes (Arnhem, Netherlands) to earn a huge win on the road against the high-powered Lions.
With the victory, the Lancers move to 1-1-2 on the season.
Against York (2-2-0), Watson scored 50 seconds into the game to give the Lancers the 1-0 lead. York would answer back a minute later on a goal by Francesco Bruno (Toronto) to tie the game at 1-1.
The Lancers then exploded offensively as they scored three more times in the half to lead 4-2 at the break.
In the second half, York would inch back closer as they scored to make it 4-3. However, that would be as close as they would get as Windsor held on for the thrilling 4-3 victory.
Watson had a phenomenal performance against York as he was all over the field and he scored twice, including the winner to give his team the upset victory. Bruno scored all three goals for York.
Both teams play again on Sept. 26, when York visits Waterloo and Windsor hosts McMaster. Both games start at 3:15 p.m.
QUEEN'S 0, NIPISSING 0
At Queen's, the No. 8-ranked Queen's Gaels (2-1-2) battled the Nipissing Lakers (2-2-1) to a scoreless draw.
Lakers goaltender Cory Schwartz (Owen Sound, Ont.) and Gaels counterpart Eric Schubert (Brantford, Ont.) earned shutouts in net. Both are in their first year.
Queen's plays in the Battle of Kingston on Sept. 26 against RMC at 3:15 p.m., while Nipissing hosts Ryerson at 2:15 p.m.
RYERSON 2, CARLETON 1
At Ryerson, the host Rams rallied from a 1-0 deficit to defeat the No. 9-ranked Carleton Ravens 2-1.
Carleton (2-2-2) got on the scoreboard first when first-year midfielder Joey Kewin (London, Ont.) scored at the 16-minute mark.
The Rams (2-3-1) then pulled out the victory on goals by Ashkan Mahboubi (Pickering, Ont.) and Vince D'Elia (Maple, Ont.).
Carleton's road swing continues as the Ravens visit Trent on Sept. 26 at 3:15 p.m.
LAURENTIAN 4, RMC 0
At RMC, Dan Keir (Hamilton, Ont.) scored two goals to lead the visiting Laurentian Voyageurs (4-0-1) to a 4-0 win over the RMC Paladins (0-3-0).
The game was scoreless at halftime before the Voyageurs exploded for four unanswered goals. Adding to Keir's goals were Stephen Fattore (Brampton, Ont.) and Davor Alisic (Charlottetown).
Scott Cliff (Hanmer, Ont.) earned another shutout in net, making four saves.
Laurentian hosts Toronto on Sept. 26 at 2:15 p.m. RMC visits Trent in a mid-week game on Sept. 23 starting at 6:15 p.m.
GUELPH 1, WESTERN 0
At Guelph, the Gryphons (3-0-1) edged the Western Mustangs 1-0.
Fourth-year player Colin MacMillan (Newmarket, Ont.) scored the lone goal of the game. First-year goalie Adam Jovanovic (Kitchener, Ont.) made eight saves against the Mustangs (1-2-1) to earn the shutout in goal.
Guelph visits Wilfrid Laurier on Sept. 26, while Western hosts Brock. Game time for both is at 3:15 p.m.
WATERLOO 3, BROCK 1
At Brock, the Waterloo Warriors (3-0-1) rallied from an early deficit to defeat the Brock Badgers 3-1.
The Badgers (1-2-1) took an early lead on the strength of a Dan Baldassarro (Niagara Falls, Ont.) goal.
Brock took a 1-0 lead into the second half, when Waterloo exploded for three goals. Chris Lam (Guelph, Ont.) evened the score in the 67th minute, while Mohamed Aborig (Tripoli, Libya) scored both the game-winning and insurance marker.
MCMASTER 3, LAURIER 1
At McMaster, three different scorers led the host Marauders to a 3-1 win over the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (0-2-2).
Hadi Behdad (Richmond Hill, Ont.), Kyle Grootenboer (Brantford, Ont.) and Mark Reilly (Hamilton, Ont.) scored for the Marauders (1-3-0). Scoring Laurier's lone goal was Andrew Sanzsole (Kitchener, Ont.).
Laurier remains winless after winning the OUA championship last season.
