Queen’s Gaels @ Laurentian Voyageurs
Joseph Zupo of Toronto scored two first half goals leading the Gaels to a convincing 4-0 men's soccer victory over the Laurentian Voyageurs on Sunday afternoon.
The Gaels finished the regular season fourth in the OUA Eastern Division and will rematch the Laurentian Voyageurs at home on Wednesday, October 27th in the first round of the playoffs. Kickoff is set for 1:00pm.
Zupo netted his two goals in the 31st and 42nd minute of the game giving Queen's the lead they would never relinquish. Andrew Colosimo of Thunder Bay, Ont., scored in the final minute of the first half to make the score 3-0.
Gaels' striker, Eric Koskins of Richmond Hill, Ont., added a goal in the 67th minute to round out the scoring at 4-0.
Keeper Maxfield Materne of Toronto, recorded the shutout.
Queen's finishes the regular season with a record of 8-5-1, placing them one point behind Ryerson for fourth in the OUA Eastern Division.
Trent Excalibur @ Toronto Varsity Blues
The No. 6 Varsity Blues men’s soccer team shut out the Trent Excalibur 4-0 in their final game of the regular season on Saturday, October 23 to clinch first place in the OUA East division and a berth in the quarter-finals.
The Blues (10-1-3) opened the scoring in the 30th minute when fifth-year striker Nordo Gooden of Kingston, Jamaica jumped on rebound and kicked the ball past Trent goalkeeper Michael Theriault (Whitby, Ont.) and into the net.
Fellow veteran striker Alex Raphael of East York, Ont., put the Blues up by two seven minutes later when he sent a booming shot through traffic in front of the net and under Theriault.
Toronto led 2-0 at the half.
Fanny Bay, B.C., native Dylan Bams potted his third goal of the season in the 59th minute and defender Darragh McGee of Donegal, Ireland rounded out the scoring in the 78th minute to end the game at 4-0.
Carleton Ravens @ Ryerson Rams
The Ryerson Rams men's soccer team made a major statement on Saturday afternoon, blanking the No. 8 Carleton Ravens 3-0 at Lamport Stadium. In a preview of a possible OUA East semi-final, Ryerson scored all three of its goals in the second half, outrunning and outworking a Ravens team that looked to already be thinking ahead to the post-season.
Although both sides kept up a strong pace to start the game, there wasn't much in the way of scoring opportunities as both defences limited their vulnerabilities. Janarthan Sadacharalingam created some space for himself on the right side in the 30th minute, and released a low hard shot that went by the left post. Sebastien Novais began to assert himself more on the left side, as the Oakville, Ont. native slipped a pass across the penalty area to Armin Tankovic, who hit the post from a narrow angle. The rebound bounced out to Viktor Anastasov, who was stopped by the Ravens' keeper Karl Wasslen.
Peter Manginas quickly answered for Carleton, as his shot from inside the box was blocked by a defender and trickled just wide of the net. Samuel McHugh then had his shot blocked off a corner kick just before the halftime whistle.
Novais' continued work paid off early in the second half, as the rookie midfielder found the net for his third goal of the season. Less than 10 minutes later, he threaded another ball across the box to Adrian Mancini, who placed a hard shot to the bottom right corner to put Ryerson up by two.
With the Rams in control late into the game, Tankovic picked up a rebound after some good passing and a shot on goal. The second year would not be denied in his second opportunity, as he laced the ball into the back of the neck to put a stamp on the Rams' victory.
Christian Maraldo made only two saves to earn the shutout, as the Ravens began to unravel in the second period. After allowing only two goals the entire season, Carleton surrendered three in a single half, leading to frustration and two yellow cards to Jonni Okai and Devan Bruce.
With the victory, the Rams remain a single point ahead of the Queen's Gaels for third place in the OUA East. Ryerson will remain as the third seed should they win against the Trent Excalibur tomorrow afternoon in Peterborough, Ont. Although the Excalibur are in sixth place, they upset the Ravens a couple of weeks ago.
McMaster Marauders @ UOIT Ridgebacks
The McMaster Marauders men’s soccer team finished of their 2010 regular season campaign with a 2-1 win over UOIT.
Fourth year midfielder Daniel Niksic (Stoney Creek, Ont.) scored in the first half to give the Marauders an early lead. Vincent Ientile (Lorraine, France) scored early in the second half to double the Marauders’ lead. UOIT followed up with a goal in the 66th minute, but the Marauders were able to hold on for the win.
Guelph Gryphons @ York Lions
The men’s soccer team tied the York Lions 2-2 this afternoon at York. Guelph entered the game on an impressive run of four wins in the last five games. Guelph’s record moves to 4-8-3 while the Lions move to 11-2-2.
The York Lions entered the contest with a perfect 6-0-0 record at home and were vying to clinch top spot in the OUA west with a win. The game started evenly, but York jumped out to an early lead when they scored a well-taken goal in the Guelph box. Guelph leveled the score through Brendan Springer (Burlington, Ont.) off a corner kick, powerfully headed in past the York keeper.
The Gryphons managed to cope well with York's passing style, but York scored right before the end of the first half off a free kick to go into half with a 2-1 lead.
In the early stages of the second half, York dominated possession but Guelph stayed composed and patient, and maintained their shape well. As the game wore on, Guelph found their way back in and created one or two chances before tying the game in the 85th minute through top goal scorer and team co-captain Robbie Murphy (Ottawa). It was his fifth goal of the season.
The Gryphons are now the only team to take points from York at home. They go into the last game of the season tomorrow (Oct. 24) against UOIT, with a shot at reaching their goal of making playoffs.
Waterloo Warriors @ Laurier Golden Hawks
The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks pulled off a 2-2 tie in a high-adrenaline match against the Waterloo Warriors. This means that Laurier finished the season in fourth place in the OUA West with a record of 7-3-6.
Waterloo was first to score at the 16th minute forcing the Hawks to step up their game. Laurier’s Sandro Stojackovic (Waterloo, Ont.) eager to get it back pulled off a beautiful shot making it a tie game going into the second half.
At the 68th minute Waterloo’s Jesse Bean scored, pulling the visitors ahead. Finally with only one minute remaining there was a foul in Waterloo’s box giving Laurier a chance to tie the game. Donald Chmura (Waterloo, Ont.) took the shot and scored.
