Carleton's Wasslen named CIS Blackberry Athlete of the Week
Roy, a third-year science student from Bathurst, N.B., recorded back-to-back shutouts over the weekend as the Panthers (3-0-3) remained undefeated in conference play with a 1-0 win over UNB (1-2-1) and a scoreless draw with the AUS-leading and nationally ninth-ranked Dalhousie Tigers (4-0-2). The junior keeper, who leads the AUS with five shutouts and only one goal allowed in six outings (0.17 GAA), hopes to resume her stellar play when UPEI visits Mount Allison (0-2-3) on Saturday and Acadia (2-1-2) on Sunday.
Laval soccer player Caroline Collin, York rugby player Tiera Thomas-Reynolds and Calgary field hockey player Kaitlyn Longworth were also nominated for the women’s award.
Wasslen, a fifth-year chemistry student from Ottawa, was also perfect in front of his net this past weekend as he helped the Ravens improve to 5-0 on the campaign with 1-0 road victories over Trent (2-4-1) and the previously undefeated Toronto Varsity Blues (4-1-2), who were ranked fourth in the CIS Top 10 going into the contest. The 6-foot-2 senior has not allowed a goal in 450 minutes over five games this season and will try to extend his streak this week when Carleton faces Queen’s (4-2-1) on Wednesday, Ryerson (2-0-4) on Saturday and Toronto on Sunday.
