MEN’S: UOIT Ridgebacks @ Waterloo Warriors
Third year midfielder Mohamed Aborig (Tripoli, Lybia) scored three straight goals in the first 28 minutes to lift the Warriors to their second win of the season. Adam Craig (Toronto, Ont.) and Billy Bean (Waterloo, Ont.) each added a goal to defeat the UOIT Ridgebacks 5-2. Scoring for the Ridgebacks was rookie striker Justin Gordon (Pickering, Ont.) and Nikolas Pandikiu (Markham, Ont.)
In only the fourth minute of the game Aborig found the net and the Warriors did not look back. Controlling the play and showing their 2009 form, the Warriors catapulted themselves into fifth place in the OUA (Ontario University Athletics) west standings. The Ridgebacks who are newcomers to OUA men's soccer were unable to defend the relentless attack of the Warrior front line.
The Warriors (2-2-0) have started to find their stride and move the ball as a team. The black and gold hope to continue their momentum as they face the powerhouse York Lions (2-1-0) at home on Saturday, September 18 at the CIF Fields. Kickoff is set for 3:15 pm. UOIT (1-3-1) host fifth ranked Western Mustangs who remain undefeated at four wins, and no losses.
MENS: Western Mustangs @ Windsor Lancers
The Western Mustangs men's soccer team remained perfect after a 3-0 shutout over Windsor on Wednesday Sept. 15.
Andrew Murdoch of Burlington, Ont., earned his fourth shutout in five games to improve to 5-0-0 on the season. Eric Amato of Toronto netted his third game-winning goal of the season, converting on a penalty kick in the 28th minute.
Vince Caminiti and rookie Alex Martins also tallied Western's other goals.
The Mustangs, ranked No. 5 in CIS in the Sept. 14 poll, outshot Windsor 6-3. All of the Windsor's shots came in the second half. The game featured six yellow cards - three to each team.
Caminiti's insurance goal came as he dribbled through a number of Windsor defenders and hit the bottom corner of the net to beat veteran netminder Dan Mendonca. Martins scored his goal in the 76th minute, taking advantage of an open shot in Windsor's 18-yard box.
Western travels to Oshawa to face the UOIT Ridgebacks on Sept. 18 at 3:15 p.m., then plays at Laurier on Sept. 22 at 8 p.m. before returning home to host McMaster and Guelph on Sept. 25 and 26 respectively.
WOMEN’S: Ottawa Gee Gees @ Queen’s Gaels
After a 45-minute delay to the start of the game, the Gee-Gees were able to outlast the Queen’s Gaels in the cover of darkness for a 1-0 win. As a result, the garnet and grey were able to put an end to the Gaels’ undefeated season.
The lone goal of the match came at the 80 minute mark, when Gee-Gees second-year striker Christine Hardie, Pictou, N.S., was setup on the ball by fellow second-year striker Sarah De Carufel, Boisbriand, Qué., and fired an absolute rocket off the far post for the win. Second-year goalkeeper Mélissa Pesant, Gatineau, Qué., recorded her second shutout of the season for the Gee-Gees.
Head coach Steve Johnson was impressed with his team’s effort tonight: “Yes, I am very pleased with the win; a very good performance from our team.”
This was the first of five consecutive road games for the Gee-Gees who will travel up to Northern Ontario this weekend as they prepare to face Nipissingon Saturday, September 18, and Laurentianon Sunday, September 19.
