PIONEER PETROLEUMS OUA ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
HAMILTON, Ont. – The following student-athletes have been named Pioneer Petroleums Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Athletes of the Week for the period ending September 19, 2010
Each Pioneer Petroleums OUA Athlete of the Week will receive a $25 gift card and a dri-fit T-shirt, courtesy of Pioneer Petroleums.
MALE: Niko Mavrikos, Western Mustangs, Soccer
Niko Mavrikos, a third-year Management and Organizational Studies student from Victoria, British Columbia, scored seven goals in two games to lift the No. 5 Mustangs to a pair of victories this past week as Western improved to 6-0 in OUA play. He netted all five goals for the Mustangs in the 5-0 win on Saturday afternoon including four goals in 17 minutes. Earlier last week against Windsor, Mavrikos scored two goals in the 3-2 win over the Lancers.
FEMALE: Brienne Stairs, Guelph Gryphons, Field Hockey
Brienne Stairs, a fourth-year Bio-Medical student from Kitchener, Ontario spearheaded the Gryphons field hockey team to a perfect 3-0 start on the season amassing six goals. Her tally on assists this weekend was also six for a total of 12 points in three contests. Not only did the 2009 CIS Field Hockey Player of the Year contribute in goal production, she also set up the majority of plays with excellent ball distribution skills.
