University of Toronto's Hochan Ryu named ArcelorMittal Dofasco CIS male athlete of the week
OTTAWA (CIS) – Swimmers Katerine Savard from the University of Montreal and Hochan Ryu from the University of Toronto are the ArcelorMittal Dofasco CIS female and male athletes of the week for the period ending Feb. 8, 2015.

Savard, a first-year education student from Pont-Rouge, Que., was named female rookie of the year, athlete of the year and swimmer of the meet following her record-breaking performance at the RSEQ championships in Montreal. The 21-year-old Olympian, who helped the Carabins claim the team title, captured five gold medals and one silver in six races, including the best university times in the country this season in the 50m (26.57), 100m (58.46) and 200m (2:08.96) butterfly events. The super rookie, who will take part in her first CIS championships next week in Victoria (Feb. 19-21), was also part of three RSEQ-record swims, including her individual triumph in the 100 fly as well as the 4x50 medley (1:50.99) and 4x200 freestyle (8:02.54) relays.
Acadia swimmer Rebecca MacPherson, Toronto swimmer Kylie Masse and Thompson Rivers volleyball player Iuliia Pakhomenko were also nominated for the women's award.
Ryu, a second-year cognitive science student from Richmond Hill, Ont., was named male swimmer of the year and won the Dr. Jeno Tihanyu award for individual medley excellence after he helped the Varsity Blues men capture their 12th consecutive team banner at the OUA championships in Ottawa. The talented sophomore ended the meet with four gold medals and one silver, including wins in the 200m IM (2:00.48), 400m IM (4:18.59), 200m butterfly (1:58.05) and the 4x200 freestyle relay. His times in his three individual events all rank in the top three nationally heading into the CIS championships (Feb. 19-21).
Acadia swimmer Luc Boudreau, Laval swimmer Vincent Fontaine and Alberta volleyball player Brett Walsh were the other male nominees.
