SWIMMING ROUNDUP: Results from the Laurier Invitational
Highlighting the afternoon of competition were five first place performances from the purple and gold. Female swimmers Veronica Davis-Freeman of Oakville, Ont., and Kaitlin Vanderbeek of Hamilton, both won a pair of their races on the day while male swimmer Dean Bennett of Kitchener, Ont., won the Hawks lone men's race of the day.
Fourth year Davis-Freeman took home top spot in both the 50m Breaststroke as well as the 100m Breaststroke. In both races, the veteran swimmer came in well ahead of the field, beating out Guelph's Sandra Dusolt by 1.31 seconds in the 50m and defeating Laurentian's Julie Langlois by over three seconds in the 100m.
As for Vanderbeek, the rookie won two of her four races on the day. She finished first in both the 200m Backstroke and the 200m Individual Medley. She finished off her day with a third place finish in the 50m Freestyle to earn three podium finishes for the Hawks.
In the men's competition, Bennett was the story of the day for Laurier. His first place finish in the 50m Freestyle set a new Laurier record as he touched the wall in a time of 24.15 seconds. He followed up that performance with three other Top 3 results, finishing second in the 100m Butterfly, third in the 100m Backstroke and third in the 200m Individual Medley relay. He was joined by teammates Christopher Caldwell of Brampton, Ont., Scott McAuley of Newmarket, Ont., and Christopher Courtis of Grand Cayman, KY., in finishing third in the relay.
Other notable performances from the Hawks came from Courtis, who finished third in the 100m Freestyle, Paige Mohaupt of Waterloo, Ont., who finished third in the 50m Backstroke and Richard Naylor of Tottenham, Ont., who was second in the 200m Individual Medley.

This meet was the final tune up for the Hawks prior to the OUA Championships. Laurier will head to Brock University in two weeks time, February 6-8, to go head-to-head against their Ontario counterparts as they look to bring home some hardware.
