OUA ANNOUNCES 2012 MEN'S SOCCER EAST DIVISION MAJOR AWARD WINNERS AND ALL-STARS
HAMILTON, Ont. - Ontario University Athletics (OUA) is pleased to announce the men’s soccer east division major award winners and all-stars.
The Gaels lead the way with six honours, while Carleton and Toronto each collected five awards.
The most valuable player in the east this season is second-year striker Andrew Latty (Ottawa). Latty had a remarkable sophomore campaign, tying for the OUA lead in goals with 17, and leading the Ravens to a 10-2-2 record. For his efforts, Latty was also named a first team all-star.
The 2012 east division rookie of year is Milos Scepanovic (Belgrade, Serbia) of the Ryerson Rams. The rookie of the year award is presented by Big Kahuna Sport Company. Scepanovic was the top scorer for the Rams this season, collecting six goals, while also playing a strong two-way game. Scepanovic was also named a first team all-star as a striker.
The east division coach of the year award goes to Gaels head coach Chris Gencarelli, who guided his team to an 11-1-2 regular season record and first place in the east division. This award marks the first time since 2006 that a Gaels men’s soccer benchboss earns league honours. The award is the first for Gencarelli who served as the interim head coach for the Gaels in 2007 and was named head coach in 2010.
Peter Haastrup (Ilesha, Nigeria) of the Ryerson Rams is the recipient of the 2012 east division Community Service award. Haastrup has been an integral part of the Ryerson Rams community throughout his four years on campus. Studying social work in the Faculty of Community Services, Haastrup serves as the co-chair of the Social Work Student Union where he has started an initiative to distribute food and clothing to people within the city of Toronto. Haastrup also volunteers at the Yonge Street Mission, a centre for street youth where he helps young adults secure jobs. The fourth-year student-athlete has been a mentor for several years in the Rising Rams program where Ryerson student-athletes go to local elementary schools and discuss goal setting and lead fitness classes for grade six to eight students.
In addition to the coach of the year, the Queen’s Gaels also boast five all-stars. The Gaels defence was important to their success, as they allowed only eight goals against on the season. As such, Queen’s had a pair of third-year defenders named first team all-stars in Joe Zupo (Toronto) and David Tom (Thunder Bay, Ont.). Zupo becomes an all-star for the third time, while the 2012 honour is the second for Tom. Goalkeeper Dylan Maxwell (Vancouver) and midfielders Nathan Klemencic (Trenton, Ont.) and Henry Bloemen (Toronto) were named to the east division second team.
The Carleton Ravens have three players joining Latty as east division all-stars. Midfielder Joey Kewin (London, Ont.) becomes a first team all-star for the third consecutive season after collecting eight goals for the Ravens. Sophomore defender Michael Calof (Ottawa) was also named to the first team after a strong season on the backline. Sam McHugh (Russell, Ont.) rounds out the Ravens’ all-star contingent as he was named to the second team as a midfielder.
After a 7-5-2 regular season, the Toronto Varsity Blues have five players named to the east division all-star squads, including two to the first team. A fifth-year veteran, Dylan Bams (Fanny Bay, B.C.) picks up his fourth-consecutive all-star nod, while Ezequiel Lubocki (Winnipeg, Man.) earns his third all-star status in as many years. Together the duo combined for eight goals while leading Toronto’s midfield this season. Defender Darragh McGee (Donegal, Ireland), and strikers Mario Kovacevic (Woodbridge, Ont.) and Adrian Dannel (Maloney Gardens, Trinidad & Tobago) were named to the east second team in 2012. McGee captained the young Blues squad to a fourth-place finish in the OUA east division. Dannel and Kovacevic led the Blues in scoring with five and nine goals, respectively.
East division rookie of the year Milos Scepanovic leads a trio of Ryerson Rams to first team all-star status. Scepanovic gets the nod as a striker, while midfielder Alex Braletic (Thornhill, Ont.) becomes a two-time first teamer and defender Markus Molder (Toronto) is named to the first team for the third time in his OUA career.
Rounding out the first team all-stars is Laurentian keeper Matt George (Georgetown, Ont.). After a stellar season in goal, where he guided the Voyageurs to the playoffs, George becomes the first Laurentian player to be named a first team all-star since 2010. Additionally, defenders Cameron Brooks (Whitby, Ont.) and Omar Allison (Brampton, Ont.) were named second team all-stars for the Voyageurs
After earning a playoff berth in 2012, the Nipissing Lakers find two players named second team all-stars. Rookie midfielder Jean-Michel Paulin (North Bay, Ont.) and fourth-year defender Scott Hoogkamp (Trenton, Ont.) become Nipissing’s first OUA men’s soccer all-stars since 2009.
