M-SOCCER ROUNDUP: Carleton, York, McMaster perfect after two weeks
September 7 - UOIT @ Guelph
The Guelph Gryphons men’s soccer team rebounded tonight (Sept. 7) with an impressive 5-1 victory over the visiting UOIT Ridgebacks.
This victory thrusts the Gryphons into a 2-1 standing in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) while dropping the Ridgebacks to a 0-3 start.
Following some excellent touches in the Gryphon end, Robbie Murphy received a beautiful lead pass to hammer home an early Guelph lead in the third minute of regulation. Fantastic communication amongst the defensive unit kept UOIT chances to a minimum while maximizing Gryphon possession.
This allowed for another spectacular lead pass from Brendan Springer to give Mike Bijman the goal to extend the lead in the 31st to 2-0. Great pressure from Timothy Flynn, Drew Gowan and Jared Agyemang gave Guelph countless opportunities in the Ridgeback box to round out the half.
To begin the second half, a slightly vicious tackle was recorded in the Guelph box that led to a UOIT penalty kick in the 47th minute to cut the lead to one. Justin Gordon was credited with the goal for UOIT.
The Gryphons were quick to retaliate with another brilliant lead pass by Mike Bijman to give Robbie Murphy his second in the 56th to build a 3-1 lead. A mere three minutes from his second, saw Robbie Murphy net his first hat-trick of the season by scoring outside the Ridgeback box in the 59th.
Following the Gryphons’ fourth goal, tensions began to flare as the physical play elevated on both sides. Yet despite the heightened emotions, UOIT was unable to stop Robbie Murphy from scoring his fourth goal (fifth of the season) on a breathtaking cross from Connor Elliot in the 71st.

September 8 – Laurentian @ Carleton
You can’t argue with the success of the Ravens men’s soccer team, now 3-0-0 following Saturday’s 4-0 win over the Laurentian Voyageurs. The win was anything but tidy however, as another slow start was downplayed by a dominant second half.
Just as they did in their opening game of Ontario University Athletics play, the Ravens were lethargic and uninspired in the opening 45 minutes. A goal in the 44th minute from Andrew Latty did give the Ravens a lead at the half Sunday.
“Why do we start so badly,” queried Ravens coach Sandy Mackie.
“In the first 20 minutes (Laurentian) gave us a game and they could have got one but (Mark) Krocko made a couple of good saves. After we got one we started to play, but it’s a work in progress.”
Joey Kewin gave the Ravens a 2-0 lead in the 58th minute before Latty completed his hat trick with strikes in the 68th and 84th minutes. He leads the OUA with six goals.
“We made a couple little changes and that made a difference, but you have to start positive. We’re 3-0 but I get frustrated when we don’t do the simple things right at the start of the game,” Mackie said.
Why they don’t is a mystery that captain Sam McHugh can’t solve. He said if he knew could he’d be coaching.
“It’s a problem we have to deal with. In three games we’ve had really bad starts in two of them,” said McHugh, who missed Saturday’s game with a charley horse.
“Three wins to start the season is good but at the same time we have to look to improve upon it and realize it’s early in the season and go from there.”

Queen’s @ Ryerson
TORONTO - The Ryerson Rams men's soccer team played to a 1-1 tie this afternoon against a scrappy Queen's Gaels team. The Rams, now 1-1-1 on the season, move into a tie for second place in the OUA east division standings.
The Gaels got off to a quick start as Eric Koskins (Richmond Hill, Ont.) beat his defender down the right flank and delivered a perfect cross for teammate Tommy Hong (Oakville, Ont.) to tap home. The goal came just six minutes into the contest and gave Queen's the 1-0 lead.
Queen's dictated the pace of the game for the first few minutes but the Rams were able to slow the game down and fall into their own rhythm. The patience paid off at the 29 minute mark when Armin Tankovic (Mississauga, Ont.) scored to tie the game at 1-1. Tankovic's initial shot was blocked by a defender but took a deflection back off the chest of Tankovic and bounced past the goalkeeper.
The first scoring chance of the second half came at the 55 minute mark as Queen's was awarded a free kick in a dangerous area, but the entry ball sailed over everyone's head and through the box harmlessly.
Following that opportunity, Ryerson had a flurry of chances and dominated the play. The Rams had scoring chance after scoring chance for the good portion of 10 minutes but were unable to find the back of the net.
The Rams didn't appear to want to settle for the draw and pushed up field in the dying minutes of the game. Defender Markus Molder (Toronto) stepped up and jumped on a loose ball with two minutes remaining in the game but sent a booming shot wide of goal.

RMC @ Toronto

The Blues held a 2-0 lead at the half.

In just the twelfth minute of the game, McMaster's Paterson Farrel (Oakville, Ont.) scored the first goal of the game.

September 09, 2012 – RMC @ Ryerson
TORONTO - The Ryerson men's soccer team picked up their second win of the season and extended their undefeated streak to three games after a 2-0 victory over the RMC Paladins on Sunday afternoon. The Rams (2-1-1) finish the weekend tied for second in the OUA east division with seven points.
Ryerson came out of the gate quickly as Armin Tankovic (Mississauga, Ont.) had the first scoring chance just two minutes into the game. The Rams continued to pressure RMC and at the 12 minute mark Milos Scepanovic (Belgrade, Serbia) was able to peel back towards the middle of the field and fired a left footed shot on target. The Paladins goalkeeper did well to tip the ball over the crossbar and keep the game scoreless.
The next best opportunity for the Rams came in the 26th minute as Alex Braletic (Thornhill, Ont.) fed a beautiful ball through the defenders for Vince D'Elia (Vaughan, Ont.) who floated the ball past the goalkeeper. Unfortunately for Ryerson, the play was flagged on the offside and the goal was denied.
Not to be discouraged, Ryerson continued to generate solid scoring opportunities and in the 38th minute, Scepanovic blasted home his second goal of the season to give the Rams a 1-0 lead.
Just before halftime, Scepanovic showed off his skills with a backwards flick pass that fell right to Tankovic who buried the ball past the keeper for his third of the year.
With a strong first half and holding a 2-0 lead, the Rams were able to use several bench players who have yet to see much playing time this year. Associate coach, Filip Prostran, spoke on the ability to give players new opportunities.
"We have a philosophy that everyone should have an opportunity to prove themselves at some point, regardless of their reputation or pedigree. We are still in the first part of the season and after today some people's stock has gone up and everyone had a chance to prove themselves today."
Despite the current three game undefeated streak, Prostran knows there is a lot of season left in front of them and that it will take a unified team to become one of the top dogs.
"There are a lot of veteran players (on this team), but there are a lot of new faces as well. We haven't played too many games yet, so there's a lot of work to do in terms of building our chemistry and developing our own style," said Prostran.
The team will have another week to get to know each other as the next games for the Rams come next weekend. Ryerson will head north and meet Nipissing on Saturday, September 15 at 2:00 p.m. The next day the Rams will be in Sudbury to face Laurentian at 2:00 p.m.

Queen’s @ Toronto
The No. 8 Varsity Blues men’s soccer team fell 2-1 to the Queen’s Gaels on Sunday, September 9 at Varsity Centre.
The Blues move to 1-2-0 on the season, with the Gaels improving to 2-0-1 after the first two weeks of OUA soccer action.
After a scoreless first half, Blues midfielder Dylan Bams (Fanny Bay, B.C.) registered the first scoring chance of the match, hitting the cross bar in the 55th minute.

UOIT @ York
The York University Lions men's soccer team extended its winning streak to three games this Sunday (Sept. 9), defeating the visiting UOIT Ridgebacks 3-0 at York Stadium.
Speedy striker Adrian Pena of Woodbridge, Ont., came very close to scoring only six minutes into the game, launching a header off a cross pass from Casey D'Mello of Mississauga, Ont., at the Ridgeback net, but UOIT keeper Michael Heinrich of North Vancouver, B.C., made a leaping save.
The Lions managed to solve the Ridgeback defence in the 25th minute, when rookie striker Joseph Cicchillo of North York, Ont., found the ball loose in a crowd in front of the net, and managed to kick it over the Ridgeback goaltender.
Pena had another great chance at the net, firing a free kick at the net from about thirty yards out, only to hit the far side post.
The Lions held a 1-0 lead at halftime, despite controlling the flow of play throughout the first half. Solid defensive play across the Lions' entire back end, including a sliding block by Paramvir Sekhon of Mississauga, Ont., minimized the scoring opportunities against Lions goalkeeper Sotiri Varlokostas of Toronto.
The Lions were able to increase their lead to two in the 55th minute. Cichillo was again a key element in setting up the goal, stepping around the final defender to draw the Heinrich far out of the net and putting the ball out in front of the net, leaving an easy tap in for Carlos Nogueira of Brampton, Ont.
York added an insurance marker in the 67th minute, with attacker Mark Anthony Kaye of Toronto racing to kick in the loose ball after another strong shot from Pena rang off the cross bar.
Ridgeback forward Justin Gordon of Pickering, Ont., nearly broke the York shutout in stoppage time, breaking through the last two York defenders to kick a shot at the far high corner of the net. Lion goalkeeper Colm Vance of Bradford, Ont., who had been substituted in to replace Varlokostas in the 82nd minute, leapt across the net to make an outstanding save.
With the shutout win, the Lions' extend their winning streak to three games. They have not allowed a goal against this season, and currently sit at the top of the OUA West standings.
Their next game is on Wednesday (Sept. 12) at McMaster University, at 8:15 pm. Their next home game is Sunday (Sept. 16) against the Guelph Gryphons at York Stadium at 1pm.

Western @ McMaster
Hamilton, Ont. - The McMaster men's soccer team scored the games winning goal with just six minutes left in the game to remain undefeated. Goal scorers for the Marauders were Ryan Garnett and Mark Reilly.
The game opened up with a quick goal from the visiting team. Mustang Eric Amato would put the ball in the back of the net just two minutes in and on the first shot of the game to take a very early 1-0 lead.
The first half seemed to go Western's way as they held possession throughout the first 45 minutes, but McMaster's opportunities came numerous times as well. As the defence held off the strong Western attack, McMaster's fowards continued to put pressure on the visiting goalkeeper.
The Mustangs would head into halftime up 1-0.
McMaster would get even within the opening minute of the second half of the match. With a foul just 25 yards out, midfielder Garnett would find the top corner. Despite an attempt to solidify the goal from Mark Reilly, the ball would go off a Mustang before reaching the back of the net.
The Marauders continued to put on the pressure throughout the half and it would finally pay off with just six minutes to go. With a ball fed through the middle to Reilly up front, he would beat a defender and the goalkeeper to score the goal winner.
McMaster hopes to continue their win streak on Wednesday night at 8:15pm against division rivals, the York Lions.

Laurier @ Waterloo
The Waterloo men's soccer team remains in search of their first win of the season, dropping to 0-4 following a 2-1 loss to cross-town rivals, Laurier Golden Hawks at Warrior Field on Sunday.
The black and gold once again got off to a slow start falling behind 1-0 midway through the first half. Forward Robert Kardaras (Markham, Ont.) took advantage of Waterloo's sloppy start firing home a beautifully crossed ball for his second of the season.
Laurier would add to their lead late in the second half as forward Matthew Maughn (Mississauga, Ont.) put one past Waterloo keeper Hansel Paico-Avilez (Oakville).
Waterloo responded one minute later as midfielder Evans Vordzorgbe (Ghana) tallied his first goal donning the black and gold. Unfortunately for Waterloo, they could not find the equalizer in the final 10 minutes of the match.
Laurier keeper Brett Harrington (Tilsonburg, Ont.) stopped three of four shots faced while Paico-Avilez allowed two goals on seven shots.
