LADY VEES 3-1 AFTER DAY 2 AT CURLING NATIONALS
The Lady Vees could not duplicate their performance from Day 1 when they took on Manitoba, and came out of the gate a bit sluggish. The Bisons took four in first end and would not look back. The loss dropped the Lady Vees to 2-1 in Pool B and into a tie for second, leaving Manitoba as the sole undefeated women's team in the event.
The Laurentian women refused to let fourth stone thrower, Amanda Gates (Sudbury, Ont.) go without a win on her birthday as the Lady Vees took on UPEI. The maritime team got off to a solid start taking two in the first end off a fantastic double-takeout by UPEI skip Sarah Clow.

The Laurentian team of Gates, Vanessa Maloney (Sudbury, Ont.), Jenny Gates (Sudbury, Ont.), Kim Curtin (Lindsay, Ont.) and fifth player Denise Brown (Barrie, Ont.) refused quit and replied with three points of their own in the second end. The Lady Vees broke the game open in the sixth end with a steal of two moving the score to 7-3, and hung on the rest of the way eventually running UPEI out of rocks to a 10-5 victory.
The win Thursday night clinched at least a tie-breaker game for the Lady Vees, as they have one game left. With a win on Friday morning against the Laurier Golden Hawks, the Laurentian women will assure themselves a spot in the semi-final on Sunday morning. Laurier is 2-1 in the tournament following a 6-4 victory over the Regina Cougars.
"The women bounced back very well this afternoon after not playing a very good game this morning," said Lady Vees coach Jan Pula. "We need to focus on (Friday) morning and come out ready to play."
The Western Mustangs women curlers lost a heart breaker in their only game of the day to the Saint Mary's Huskies to drop to 2-1.
Trailing 6-3 after seven ends, the Western foursome of Erin Morrissey (Ottawa, Ont.), Jackie Masongsong (Markham, Ont.), Jordan Ariss (London, Ont.) and Fiona Muirhead (London, Ont.) scored three in the eighth to tie the game.
The ninth end was blanked and despite a valiant effort to steal in the 10th, Saint Mary's took one and the 7-6 win. The Mustangs continue play on Friday with an early-morning match up with Memorial University.
The Mustangs men's team got back on track with two big wins over the Victoria Vikes and Memorial Sea-Hawks.
In afternoon men's action, the team of Scott McDonald (London, Ont.), Micky Lizmore (London, Ont.), Evan Lilly (Sudbury, Ont.) and Chris Liscumb (Ilderton, Ont.) benefited from scores of three in the first and fifth ends, and a two count in the third en route to an abbreviated 8-3 victory over Victoria.
In the team's second game of the day, McDonald was joined by Lizmore, Lilly and Peter Myslik (Sudbury, Ont.) in an important match up with the Sea-Hawks. The first half of the game was a back and forth affair that saw the teams tied 4-4 at the fifth-end break.
A superb run back by McDonald in the sixth end paid dividends with a steal of two. In the seventh, the Mustangs continued to apply the pressure and the result was a steal of one more, which put Western up by three.
The Mustangs forced Memorial to a single in the eighth end and took one themselves in the ninth to regain their three-point spread. McDonald and company were up to the task of keeping things clean in the final frame, running Memorial out of rocks for the 8-5 win.
"We got back to focusing on the little things as opposed to the big picture and it seemed to serve us well," said McDonald. "We feel confident that we have the capability to continue to compete at this level."
McDonald and the Mustang men conclude round-robin play on Friday afternoon with a pivotal game against Regina. The winner will claim first place in Pool C and gain entry to Saturday's semi-final play.
The Laurier men are 1-2 winning their only game on Thursday, a 9-2 triumph over the Calgary Dinos. The Brock Badgers are 0-4 dropping a 7-6 decision to Memorial followed by a 10-4 loss to Regina.
