QUEEN'S, WESTERN DOMINATE OUA CURLING SECTIONALS
In the East, Queen's men played well, winning in all of their games by comfortable margins. Toronto's men played strong games and have again established their position as contenders for a provincial berth. Though their record does not reflect the quality of their play, newcomer Laurentian faced strong opposition, some unforgiving ice and some equally bad breaks, in their debut in OUA curling.
Trent, as with their play last year, again showed their steel, however, were tested in a strong East women's section. Queen's, Trent and Laurentian traded wins leaving Toronto in a no-win situation despite some exceptional shot making. The East results clearly indicate the overall strength of the section this year, and will be well worth watching in crossover play in two weeks.
The West Section was just as tough, led by the Western Mustangs who were almost perfect, losing only once in eight games to Brock (men). The Western women proved to be a force over the weekend, winning four straight games against their opponents, including the 2008 national champion Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks.
The men's side of the West draw was an interesting contest as Waterloo, Windsor and Brock all chased Western and stayed in close proximity for provincial play. With a new line-up, including both new and old varsity players, Laurier struggled through the competition posting their first win in their last game against the Waterloo Warriors.
OUA curling heads into crossover play the weekend of Jan. 30 to Feb. 1 at Brock, as the four finalists are determined for the provincial titles that will be contested Feb. 6 to 8 in Peterborough hosted by Trent University.
This year, the top three finalists in OUA will have the opportunity to compete at the CIS/CCA Nationals in Montreal, Que. March 25 to 29, so the stakes are even higher for our university athletes with a berth, representing Canada, next February in Japan.
