OUA ANNOUNCES CURLING ALL-STARS AND COACH OF THE YEAR
Rory Munro, head coach of the Western Mustangs, is the 2008-09 Coach of the Year. The Mustangs men's team posted an OUA-best 7-1 mark during the divisional sectionals and crossovers, outscoring the competition 52-28. This team features three First Team and one Second Team All-Star.
Skip Scott McDonald (London, Ont.), vice Micky Lizmore (London, Ont.) and second Evan Lilly (Sudbury, Ont.) all claim First Team All-Star honours for the Mustangs. All are in their second year. Lizmore is a repeat All-Star, earning Second Team status in 2007-08. Rounding out the Western All-Stars is lead Peter Myslik (Sudbury, Ont.), who is a member of the Second Team.
Waterloo Warriors second-year lead Rob Fry (Midland, Ont.) is the only non-Mustang to make the First Team. Fry is a repeat winner, having earned First Team All-Star status in the lead position one season ago. The Warriors narrowly missed going to the OUA Curling Championships in Peterborough this weekend, finishing the season with a 4-4 record but losing 7-3 to the Toronto Varsity Blues in a tiebreaker.
Toronto third-year skip Pat Janssen (Scarborough, Ont.) is a Second Team All-Star, narrowly missing out on the OUA finals after dropping a 5-2 tiebreaker to the Queen's Gaels. Laurentian Voyageurs freshman second Ryan Lafraniere (Sudbury, Ont.) also earns Second Team status in the program's first season in OUA curling. Laurentian has a 3-5 record in the sectionals and crossovers. Brock Badgers vice Jeff Inglis (Kleinberg, Ont.) rounds out the men's Second Team list, and will be in Peterborough competing for an OUA title.
The Trent Excalibur have three OUA All-Stars leading them into battle at the OUA Curling Championships on home ice this weekend. Trent sophomore second Becky Clements (Peterborough, Ont.) was named to the First Team, while third-year skip Jenna Bonner (Cavan, Ont.) and second-year lead Leeann Mugford (Peterborough, Ont.) earn Second Team status. Trent had a 5-3 record in the sectionals and crossovers.
Skip Lisa Farnell of the Queen's Gaels is a repeat First Team All-Star on the women's side. Freshman All-Star vice Amanda Gates (Sudbury, Ont.) was part of a Laurentian Lady Vees squad who advanced to the OUA Curling Championships in the program's first season with a 6-2 record. Rounding out the women's First Team is freshman Lindsay Collie (London, Ont.) of the Waterloo Warriors.
Western Mustangs vice Jackie Masongsong (Markham, Ont.) and Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks second Laura Hickey (Toronto, Ont.) are both repeat All-Stars, being named to the Second Team. Both are in their third seasons. Western had a league-best record of 7-1, while Laurier finished in a tie with Laurentian for second with a 6-2 mark. Hickey is part of a group of Laurier curlers competing at the 24th Winter Universiade in Harbin, China at the end of February.
First-year OUA curler Dayna Connelly (Thorold, Ont.) of the Brock Badgers rounds out the Second Team as a co-winner at the lead position alongside Mugford.
Munro and the 2008-09 OUA All-Stars will be honoured at a banquet following round robin play at the OUA Curling Championships in Peterborough, Ont. on Saturday.
