W-RUGBY ROUNDUP: Gaels and Gryphs remain undefeated
For the third year in a row the Waterloo women's rugby team was victorious in their cross-town rival match with the Laurier Golden Hawks. This year the black and gold held on for the 27-22 win in a Friday afternoon match at the CIF fields.
Waterloo held a 27-5 late into the match but Laurier showed their grittiness and worked their way back with three straight tries. Fortunately for the Warriors the final whistle would secure their fourth win of the season. Waterloo is now 4-1 on the season, good for second spot in the OUA Shields Division while Laurier falls to 0-5.
Waterloo held a 15-5 lead at half thanks to tries by Erinne Lee Vargas (Kitchener), Megan Colwell (Spencerville) and Renee Woodhouse (Stratford). Scoring the lone first half try for the Hawks was scrumhalf Samantha Reid of Stouffville, Ont.
Things would intensify in the second half as Waterloo would come out flying. Fourth year wing Sarah Jane Garland (New Hamburg) would be the beneficiary of a perfect pass by Woodhouse and take it all the way for the try. Nastasha Vrablic (Cambridge) would add the conversion to put Waterloo up 22-5.
Shortly after, rookie scrumhalf Caitlyn Page (Ilderton) would add to Waterloo's lead with her first try as a Warrior.
On the ensuing kickoff the Golden Hawks would tilt the field in their favour as Amanda Lewis (Waterloo, Ont.) put together a great run down field to cut into the Warrior lead.
Jessica Hilker (Peterborough, Ont.) would continue the comeback effort for the Hawks with her first try of the season.
Down only by a score of 27-15, Laurier would once again take control following the restart and Ellen Fisher (Mississauga, Ont.) would punch home Laurier's third straight try. Jennifer Gilmour (Waterloo, Ont.) would be successful on the conversion but it would be too little too late for the visiting side as the final whistle gave Waterloo the close 27-22 victory.
The Warriors (4-1) travel to London next Friday for their final regular season match of the season against the Western Mustangs (3-1).

Queen’s @ Trent
KINGSTON, Ont. – A balanced attack led the Queen's Gaels to a victory, 55-8, over the Trent Excalibur, in OUA women's rugby action in Peterborough, Friday night. The Gaels got scoring from nine different players as they ran their record to 5-0 and clinched first place in the OUA's Russell Division.
“We played a bit of a different lineup tonight, and were able to get lots of people some playing time. We rested some key people, and this will helps us make decisions as we get into the playoffs. But even with new people in the lineup, our attack worked were and we were good with the ball around the breakdown,” said Beth Barz, the Gaels' head coach.
After the teams traded scores in the first ten minutes (a Samantha Ellis try for the Gaels, a Celeigh Harris penalty for Trent), the Gaels put the game away with a pair of tries two minutes apart. Jenna Ledson found the end zone in the 14th minute, and Marin MacLeod put the ball down two minutes later. Bronwyn Corrigan converted both tries, putting Queen's up 19-3. Queen's added two more tries in the first half, from Kayla Roote and Caitie Ryan, to take a 31-3 lead at the interval.
In the second half, Kaitlin Newton scored for Trent on the hour mark, to cut the gap to 31-8, but rookie-of-the-year candidate Nadia Popov's try in the 66th minute squashed any hopes of an Excalibur fightback. Taylor White scored two minutes later, followed by a Popov conversion to put Queen's up 43-8. In the last five minutes, tries by Rose Sanderson, along with White's second of the evening, provided Queen's with their final margin of victory.
“It was nice to see us having a balanced scoring attack,” said Barz. “We had our backs score some tries today, which was good to see.”
The Gaels close out the regular season on Friday, October 5, as they host the York Lions. Kickoff at Nixon Field is set for 6 p.m.

September 30 – Guelph @ Western
It was a tale of two halfs for the Western Mustangs women’s rugby team Sunday afternoon when they played host to the defending CIS Champion Guelph Gryphons as part of Western’s Homecoming Weekend. Despite strong play in the first half, the Gryphons capitalized on Western’s errors in the second to come away with a 41-0 victory.
“Our first half plus the first five minutes of the second half were fantastic. We kept them to a really close game, and we were really happy we did a lot of great stuff,” said Mustangs head coach Natascha Wesch. “Then mentally we broke down for a 25-minute span, and a team like they are, national champions, they’re going to capitalize on that. We have to work on keeping that mental edge, but focus on the positives heading into our last game against Waterloo and try to capture second place to get into a good playoff position.”
The Mustangs started out strong limiting the Gryphons to only 14 points in the early portion of the game. During the later stages of the first half Western played effective defence, employing a bend but don’t break style that kept the Gryphons from adding to their lead, making it 14-0 at half time.
After half time the game played out similar to the first half, however things soon turned in the Gryphons favour, beginning with a try near the right sideline. Guelph quickly regained possession and added another try and convert, before Caitlin Beaton scored another try for the Gryphons after a long run through the Western defence.
The Mustangs tried to get things back on track, but every time the team would be about to break through the Guelph defence a pass would go slightly off target or be deflected preventing Western from generating any sustained attack. Guelph would capitalize on these errors to eventually build a 41-point lead.
Although the game was out of reach the Mustangs refused to give up, turning things around and returning to the strong defensive play they displayed in the first half. The team made a late push on offence when strong runs from Arielle Dubisette-Borrice and Kaitlin Maddigan put the ball deep in Guelph territory. The final whistle would sound before the Mustangs could score, making it 41-0 for the Gryphons.
Western now heads into its final game of the regular season, with eyes on finishing strong going into the playoffs.
“We’re going to focus on the positives, on the things we did well, because we did a lot of things well and it’s just tidying up a few of the little pieces where the ball got away from us, or losing the ball on contact.,” said Wesch. “Not capitalizing on certain situations and increasing the speed of the game.”
The Mustangs host Waterloo this Friday at 2:00 p.m. in their final game of the regular season.
