Brock @ Queen’s
Kingston, Ont. - Bronwyn Corrigan (Waterloo, Ont.) led the No. 5-ranked Queen's Gaels with four tries in their 37-0 win over the Brock Badgers in OUA women's rugby action , Wednesday. The third-year lock had a career day as the Gaels cruised to the win in their first game at newly-renovated Nixon Field.
Gillian Pegg (Barrie, Ont.) put the first points on the board with a try in the second minute that originated from a ruck. The Gaels stole the ball and spun it wide giving Pegg the opportunity to put Queen's on the board.
Corrigan scored the second try of the game, going on a 15 yard run in the tenth minute. Twenty minutes later, excellent teamwork and communication by the Gaels allowed Pegg to score her second try, and a try by Nadia Popov (Newmarket, Ont.) in the 38th minute put Queen's up 20-0 at halftime.
The second half of the game saw Brock gain some momentum, as they entered the second half of the game with more energy. However, they were not able to break past the defensive tactic of the Gaels.
In the 65th minute of the game, Corrigan managed to break through the Badgers' defense to score her second try of the game. She went on to score two more tries in second half, in the 73rd and 77th minutes. A 74th-minute conversion by Danielle Underwood (Toronto, Ont.) rounded out the scoring.
“It was a good first league game,” said Gaels Head Coach Beth Barz. “In set pieces, our scrums played well and we moved the ball forward well, but we will need to improve on our rucks.”
Queen's (1-0) will visit Western on Sunday.

Western @ York
The York University Lions women's rugby team went down by a score of 52-22 in the first game of the season for both teams on Wednesday evening at York's Rugby Field.
Most of the offence came in the second half as just two tries were scored in the first. The Mustangs held a 14-0 advantage at the break on a beautiful night at York's Keele campus.
The game started to pick up immediately in the second half. The Lions dominated play for the first five minutes and kept the ball in Western's end but could not get into the in-goal area. The Mustangs finally broke free and ran the ball down the length of the field, scoring their third try of the game to increase their lead.
The Lions got on the board first on a try by third-year player Fedelia Omoghan of Toronto, who scored her first of the season. Rookie Shari Stefaniuk of Mississauga, Ont., made good on the convert to give the Lions seven points.
The two teams traded tries back and forth for the rest of the game as points were racked up at both ends of the pitch. Each time the Lions scored the Mustangs would reply almost immediately, and they were able to increase their lead as the contest wore on.
Second-year player Amber Barrett of Kitchener, Ont., the team's co-MVP last season as a rookie, lived up to that billing again with a game-high 15 points on three tries. She is currently tied with Guelph's Britt Benn for the OUA scoring lead after one week.
Western had seven different players score tries in the game, led by Lori Josephson's two. Also tallying five points each for the Mustangs were Emma Clarke, Mackenzie Fane, Caitlin Gillen, Nat Kreiger and Danielle Spice.
Meaghann Buitinga was the leading point-scorer for the Mustangs as she was successful on six convert attempts for 12 points.
The Lions will get right back to it this weekend with a game against the McMaster Marauders, who won the OUA silver medal last season. The contest is set for 3pm at the York Rugby Field on Sunday (Sept. 9).
