McMaster @ Ryerson
The Ryerson Rams men's volleyball team stuck with the No. 3 nationally ranked McMaster Marauders for much of two sets but could not squeak out a victory and fell in straight sets on Saturday afternoon.
The Marauders asserted themselves quickly in the first set, jumping out to an 11-2 lead. In what seemed like a McMaster-dominated set, the Rams actually came out with more kills, but could not keep the ball in play to take a lead. The Marauders needed just 16 minutes to take the first set handily, 25-15.
Ryerson didn't seem fazed by the quick loss and built a four point lead at 11-7 after a Stefan Ristic (Belgrade, Serbia) kill. McMaster picked up their offence though, registering 11 kills in the remainder of the set (for a set total of 16) to climb back into it.
The teams traded points down the stretch and Ryerson held set point at 24-23 but Dany Demyanenko Jimenez (Toronto) earned back-to-back points on a block and kill from the middle to give the Marauders set point. A Jayson McCarthy (Oshawa, Ont.) block put an end to the exciting set to give McMaster a 28-26 win.
The Rams stuck with the Marauders throughout the third set but couldn't muster any significant point streaks to take a lead. Consecutive service errors from McMaster gave the Rams late life but they ultimately lost the set 25-22 to complete the Marauder sweep.
Head coach Mirek Porosa was pleased with the effort from the squad against one of the top teams in the country.
"We will use this as a building block. We stuck with them for two sets and that's what we want to build on...and keep our heads held high."
The Rams were led by Robert Wojcik (Whitby, Ont.) and Luka Milosevic (Toronto) who each finished with eight kills. After a tough start, middle Marc Reardon (London, Ont.) had a strong game with five kills and two blocks while being matched against one of the best up and coming players on the other side of the net.
"After he got some water and composed himself he settled in and dominated in the middle. He was scoring on one of the best young players in the country in Demyanenko and for a second year guy, it was pretty impressive", said Porosa of Reardon's play.
Tomorrow the Rams return to the court for a game against the York Lions.
"It is always a dog-fight with them. This is a game we have to win if we want to make the playoffs so it will be a big one for us", commented Porosa.

Queen's @ Waterloo
The No. 10 Waterloo men's volleyball team continued to roll after a 3-1 (25-17, 15-25, 25-19, 25-19) win over the defending OUA champions, Queen's Gaels. The win keeps the Warriors perfect at 5-0 while the Gaels drop to 4-2 on the season.
The Warriors were led by their middles Jordan Dyck (St. Catharines) and Tyler Motherwell (Toronto) who had 11 and 10 kills respectively. They also combined for eight blocks.
Fourth year setter Scott Thomson (St. Marys) was again a huge factor for the Warriors with an astounding 43 assists in the match.
The first set saw the Warriors jump out to a 15-11 lead before the Gaels would quiet the rambunctious home crowd with four straight points to pull within one. Motherwell would put an end to the Gaels run and put the Warriors up 16-14 into a technical timeout.
From there the Warriors would continue their strong play taking a 19-17 lead and following it up with the next six points to claim the first set 25-17.
The home side would fall asleep in the second set as the Gaels controlled it from the get-go, opening a 21-11 lead en route to the 25-15 set win.
All square at one set a piece, the pivotal third set would prove to be a seesaw affair with Waterloo extending an eight point lead (19-11) before watching it evaporate as the Gaels would close to within three.
The Warriors would maintain their three point lead until libero Erich Woolley (New Dundee) would make the dig of the night sending it to an empty back court to extend their lead to 25-17. That stellar defensive play would ignite the Warriors and give them the momentum to take the third set 25-19.
The fourth set would open again as a point-for-point affair before the Warriors would open a 13-9 lead on a great dump by Thomson. The fourth year recreation and business student would then take over the serving position and notch three straight points to give his Warriors a 16-9 lead.
The eight point deficit would prove to be too insurmountable for the Gaels and the Warriors would cruise to take the set 25-19 and match 3-1.
Rookie left side, Sergey Grabovsky (Aurora) was looking anything but a first year with timely hits and digs throughout the match. He finished the game with 12 kills, six digs and three blocks. Zachary Doherty (Goderich) and Aleks Poldma (Toronto) were also crucial factors in the win with eight and seven kills respectively.
Defensively, Woolley stepped up his game in the late going of the match and had a total of 14 digs, the highest amongst both teams.
For the Gaels Philippe Goyer (Ottawa) led his team with 14 kills, four digs and two blocks. Outside hitter Mike Tomlinson (Stratford) was as impressive with 12 kills while setter Jackson Dakin (Courtenay) had 31 assists.

November 11 - York @ Ryerson
Ryerson's men's volleyball team got the best of their city rivals from York on Sunday afternoon as the Rams overcame a first set loss to take the next three straight to claim a 3-1 victory.
The York Lions dominated play in the first set using a combination of great blocking from Felipe Humana-Paredes (Toronto) and Gregory Ivan (Toronto) with an efficient attack game. The Lions committed just one error in the first to help them to a quick 25-16 victory.
Ryerson was able to adjust their plan of attack after York posted eight blocks in the first set, to collect 19 kills in the second.
"We told our guys to reach high, swing high, and aim for the hands. We found a lot of our attackers were dropping their elbow and trying to beat the block so we told them to try to wipe it and get some tips which ended in positive results", commented assistant coach Roger Marszalek following the game.
After a slow start, Rams outside hitter Stefan Ristic (Belgrade, Serbia) and right side Robert Wojcik (Whitby, Ont.) found their hitting strokes as they each tallied eight kills in the second set to help Ryerson grind out a 28-26 set win to tie the match.
Fifth year Luka Milosevic (Toronto) was instrumental in the victory as he recorded a big kill from the middle to give the Rams set point and finished it off with a block.
York held a lead as large as five in the third set at 14-9 but the Rams showed perseverance and challenged the Lions, forcing York to make several attack errors. Those points helped the Rams close to within two before Wojcik posted back-to-back kills to tie the score at 19-19.
The teams traded points down the stretch but an ill-timed York service error gave Ryerson set point at 28-27 and for the second time, Milosevic closed the set with a block to give the Rams a 29-27 win to lead the match 2-1.
Wojcik carried the Rams the rest of the way, posting nine kills in the fourth set on his way to a game-high 26 on the afternoon. The Lions led 16-14 at the technical timeout but Ryerson out-hit their opponents down the stretch to take the lead back at 19-18. The Rams never looked back once they got the lead and finished the set with a 25-21 win to take the match 3-1.
The Rams had good support for Wojcik as Ristic finished with 14 kills and Marc Reardon (London, Ont.) also reached double-digits with 10 kills on 12 attempts, but the story was the play of Wojcik.
"He had a tough first set, you could tell, but we had a chat with him off to the side and just told him to smile and have some fun and he caught fire. When he's hitting at the peak of his jumps, no one in this league can stop him. He has the ability to be an All-Canadian and he proved it today against a good defensive team", said Marszalek.
Wojcik finished with nearly 50 attack attempts on the afternoon, something that will certainly draw attention from other teams, but the Rams aren't worried.
"We know the coaches in the league will look at the tapes and find his tendencies. He's in the role to be our go-to hitter so he's aware there will be at least a double or sometimes triple block every time. We feel confident with his height and his reach that he can still beat the block and use his power, strength, and IQ to carry us throughout the season", added Marszalek.
Nikola Sandic (Etobicoke, Ont.) finished with a team-high 14 kills for the Lions while Ray Szeto (Sutton, Ont.) added 13 and Karim Khalil (Mississauga, Ont.) finished with 11.
