M-VOLLEYBALL ROUNDUP: Full slate of action across Ontario
The McMaster men’s volleyball team remained undefeated in league play, by sweeping the defending OUA champions from Queen’s 3-0 on Friday night.
The Marauders, who moved up to No. 3 in the CIS top-ten rankings this week, defeated the Gaels by set scores of 25-19, 26-24, and 25-22.
While Queen’s won the league title last year, it is fair to recognize the Gaels are a different team this season after the graduation of several standout players. Despite the player losses, the squad from Kingston remains a quality contender and McMaster Coach Dave Preston reminded his Marauders of that before the match.
“This was not a great effort by us,” said Coach Preston after the match. “We did enough to get the win, but we will have to be better than that and we will be!”
The McDonald’s BIG MAC of the game for the Marauders was third-year leftside Jori Mantha, who led the team with 18 points. Player of the game for Queen’s was Phillippe Goyer.
Other stat leaders saw both McMaster middles, Alex Elliott and Dany Demyanenko, chip in with10 points for the match. Setter Austin Campion-Smith was solid with 26 assists.
The Marauders now go to 2-0 in early season OUA play.
Waterloo @ Guelph
The Guelph Gryphons men’s volleyball team opened their season tonight (Oct 26) against the Waterloo Warriors at the W.F. Mitchell Centre. It was an incredibly close match that came down to the fifth set, but the Warriors ultimately came out on top with a 15-13 win over the Gryphons in the final frame. Set scores were 25-19, 19-25, 23-25, 26-24 and 13-15.
The loss drops the Gryphons to 0-1 while boosts the Warriors to 1-0 to start the season.
The first set was a deceiving indication as to how the game was going to unfold as the Gryphons were able to capitalize on several unfortunate Warrior mishaps to take the set 25-19. Phillip Wessel (Cambridge, Ont) and Marc Wilson (Stratford, Ont) were vicious at the net to shut down the Warrior opposition and allowing Winston Rosser (Whitby, Ont) the opportunity to kill the set point to establish an early Gryphon lead.
However, the Warriors were quick to jump on their mistakes in the previous set as they took an early 6-2 lead that they were able to maintain throughout to pull off a 25-19 win as Zachary Doherty (Goderich, Ont) sealed the second set.
Marc Wilson was able to establish an early Gryphon lead in the third set with a huge block to thwart the Warrior momentum. However, the Warriors remained unfazed as control of the set swapped sporadically between both teams. In the dying stages of the third, the Gryphons found themselves trailing by six. Winston Rosser and Andrew Whittaker (Sharon, Ont) were able to rally the Gryphons but were unfortunately unable to close the gap as they dropped the set 25-23.
No team was able to pull ahead by more than two in the fourth until Whittaker was able to steal the Warrior momentum and regain control as the Gryphons jumped ahead 23-21. With a last ditch effort by the Warriors, the game was forced to 26, but following a line violation, Winston Rosser was able to steal the 26th point to send the match to 5.
The fifth set saw some of the best rallies of the night, but neither team was able to establish a commanding lead until Ryan Killeen (Oakville, Ont) and Phillip Wessel (Cambridge, Ont) connected with a devastating block to push the Gryphons ahead by one. Marc Wilson nailed two explosive spikes back-to-back to extend the lead but despite the strong change in momentum, the Warriors were able to silence the home crowd to steal a 15-13 win in the fifth to jump ahead 1-0 in OUA regulation.
The Gryphons were led by Winston Rosser with 14 kills while Andrew Whitaker and March Wilson contributed 12 kills.

RMC @ York
The York University Lions men's volleyball team defeated the RMC Paladins in straight sets on Friday (Oct. 26), winning in straight sets by scores of 25-12, 25-20 and 25-19 at the Tait McKenzie Centre.
The Lions' offence was spearheaded by third-year outside hitter Nikola Sandic (Etobicoke, Ont.), whose 12 kills were the most of any player in the game. Fellow third-year outside hitter Ray Szeto (Sutton, Ont.) added another nine kills for the Lions and 11 points overall, with one block and one service ace.
Paul Jakubiak (Toronto) led both teams in assists with 28, and also contributed six digs to the defensive effort. The Lions dig leader for the match was Karim Khalil (Mississauga, Ont.), who scored eight.
The Paladins played strongly despite the result, especially throughout the second set when they were able to keep pace with the Lions nearly point for point. Tyler Leknois (Kingston, Ont.) scored seven of the team's 22 total kills, and Eric Hawn (London, Ont.) earned 19 of the Paladins' 20 assists.
Sandic's 14.5 points were enough to make him the game leader, an effort to which he also added five digs.
The win improves the Lions' record to 1-1 on the season after a loss to the nationally-ranked McMaster Marauders last weekend. RMC, which has not won a game in their last five seasons, drops to 0-1.

Windsor @ Ryerson
The Ryerson Rams men's volleyball team earned a 3-1 victory over the Windsor Lancers on Friday night, picking up their first win of the season in their home opener.
The Rams used an efficient 23.0 kill percentage to help them to the win.
Early on Ryerson had difficulties executing on offence and earned all but one of their first eight points off Windsor errors. The Lancers committed ten attack errors and four service errors in the set to keep the Rams within striking distance.
At the technical timeout Windsor led 16-14 but the break gave the Rams a chance to regroup and the coaching staff helped calm the squad.
"We just told them to be patient. It was the home opener and some of the guys were nervous but after that we started passing better and serving better. It was a big win in the first to give us confidence", said assistant coach Lukas Porosa following the game.
The Rams rallied to take the set 25-20. George Sakvarelidze (Toronto) led the team with four kills through the first set.
In the second set Ryerson's net presence picked up as they tallied four blocks for points but numerous others helped them set up defensively and transition into offence. The combination of Sakvarelidze and Marc Reardon (London, Ont.) was particularly effective.
The Rams built a 23-15 lead and looked to be on their way to a 2-0 lead but Windsor made things interesting by earning seven of the next eight points to make it 24-22. A Brandon Jordan (London, Ont.) roll shot over the block sealed the Ryerson win, 25-22.
Windsor came out hungry in the third set and built an early 9-5 lead, forcing a Ryerson timeout. The Lancers continued to lead and took a 16-11 lead into the technical timeout. Good serving from the Lancers caused some miscommunication between the Rams passers and led to four Windsor aces. Windsor took the third by a score of 25-15.
After a back and forth start to the fourth, Ryerson returned to their solid blocking in the fourth set and gained a 19-16 advantage. Blocking was an important piece to the Rams' game and gave them the edge they needed.
"We out-blocked Windsor and in key momentum moments we had a lot of stuff blocks. Any time you can get quick points like that is a good boost", said Porosa.
A Luka Milosevic (Toronto) kill finished off the match for the Rams as they took the fourth set by a score of 25-19 to claim the 3-1 victory.
Milosevic finished with a team-high 11 kills and added three blocks. Alex Dawson (Scarborough, Ont.) added nine kills for the Rams while Sakvarelidze finished with eight kills, two service aces, a team-high 11 digs, and a game-high four blocks.
Two-time all-Canadian Kyle Williamson (Essex, Ont.) led the Lancers with 13 kills. Just behind him was Adam Thompson (Portage, Man.) with 12 and Greg Simone (London, Ont.) added 11. Libero Blase Wasser (Burlington, Ont.) finished with a game-high 13 digs.

October 27 - RMC @ McMaster
The McMaster men’s volleyball team, currently ranked No. 3 in Canada, moved to 3 and 0 in the OUA season, with a dominant three set sweep over the visiting RMC Paladins on Saturday evening.
The Marauders took it right at the Paladins from the start of the contest and kept the pressure on throughout the match. The set scores were 25-7, 25-13, and 25-6.
The first set saw the score get to 10-4 for the Maroon, forcing an RMC timeout. At the technical timeout the score had grown to 16-4, as RMC struggled with its passing game and McMaster’s size at the net.
The second and third sets were similar as McMaster jumped out to big leads, hitting the technical timeout in each set with margins of 16-4 and 16-3 respectively.
McMaster’s Tyson Alexander was the top scorer in a balanced attack with 11 points. The BIG MAC player of the game was setter Ian Cooper, who finished with 21 assists and played a strong defensive game at the net, as the Marauders put up a strong block as a team.

Queen's @ York
The York University Lions men's volleyball team nearly came back from two sets down but was ultimately defeated 3-2 by the Queen's Gaels at the Tait McKenzie Centre on Saturday night (Oct. 27).
The Gaels took the first two sets by matching scores of 25-23, and then the Lions won the next two 25-22, 25-15 to force a fifth and deciding set. But the Gaels dominated the final frame from the outset and won it 15-10.
The two sets played out in nearly identical fashion. The two teams traded points throughout the first half of each, and the Gaels held leads of 16-15 and 16-13 at the technical timeouts but were not able to pull away. The Lions got as close as 24-23 in the first set before the Gaels won on their first set point, and in the second they tied it at 22-all before falling again.
However, the Lions were finally able to capitalize on the big points down the stretch in the third set. At 21-all, the Lions won three straight to set up set point, which they took advantage of on the second try.
The Gaels opened up an early lead in the fourth, at 9-8, but the Lions put together a six-point run to lead 17-11, and then another of the same length to pull ahead 23-13 before finally closing out the set and sending it to five.
Aside from an early 2-1 deficit in the fifth, the Gaels never trailed and, at 8-8, won six of the next seven points to set up match point and they finally closed the deal to win their first game of the season.
The Gaels are now 1-1 on the year, while the Lions sit at 1-2.
Mike Tomlinson (Stratford, Ont.) finished with a match-high 19.5 points, scored on 15 kills, 3.5 blocks and one service ace. Despite his impressive numbers, he struggled with his serve throughout the match and hit five of them into the net.
York middle Gregory Ivan (Toronto) led all Lions with 18 points, scored on 12 kills, four blocks and two service aces. Third-year outside hitter Ray Szeto (Sutton, Ont.) also had a strong night with 17 points, on 14 kills, two blocks and one service ace, as well as 12 digs, as did team captain Karim Khalil (Mississauga, Ont.) with 13 points, on 11 kills and two service aces, and 12 digs.
York setter Paul Jakubiak (Toronto) and Queen's setter Jackson Dakin (Courtenay, B.C.) each had 43 assists in the match. The Lions were led on defence by rookie libero Grant O'Gorman (Scarborough, Ont.), who posted 16 digs, while Gaels libero Jacob Glantz (St. Catharines, Ont.) led all players with 16.

Western @ Ryerson
After a win on opening night the Ryerson Rams men's volleyball team couldn't find the same amount of energy against Western and fell 3-0 to the Mustangs on Saturday evening.
Western won the battles in a lot of statistical categories including out-hitting, out-blocking, and out-digging the Rams.
Ryerson trailed by six on two separate occasions in the first set but battled back to take their first lead since 1-0 at the 25-24 point. The Rams could not put the Mustangs away, however, and after several good rallies, Western emerged victorious on a Phil James (Ottawa, Ont.) block to take the set 28-26.
The Rams struggled offensively in the second, tallying just six kills to Western's 17. Mustangs outside attacker Garrett May (Scarborough, Ont.) took over with nine kills in the set to lead Western to a quick 25-14 win.
Ryerson gave away a lot of points on attack and service errors throughout the night which put them behind early and often. After the match, assistant coach Chris McLaughlin commented about their serving woes.
"It's something we talked about half way through the game and tried to correct it but unfortunately these things happen and we'll just have to work on it to get better for next week."
In the third set the Rams got out to an early five point lead at 8-3 but couldn't hold on as Western stormed back to take a four point lead at 17-13. Ryerson continued to battle as they tied things up at 17-17 but Western took eight of the last 11 points to secure a 25-20 set win.
When asked about his team's ability to claw their way back into the game, McLaughlin was happy with the performance, despite the loss.
"It's nice to see that we don't just fold or give up when we're down. It shows we have the fight and hopefully next time we can complete the comeback."
Alex Dawson (Scarborough, Ont.) finished with a team-high eight kills for the Rams. Marc Reardon (London, Ont.) had a strong game in the middle, posting six kills and two blocks. Libero Brian Battista Bettencourt (Azores, Portugal) finished with a team-high seven digs despite playing in just two of the three sets.
May finished with 17 kills on the night for Western while rookie Justin Scapinello (London, Ont.) added nine. Senior Luke Sim (Toronto) had a game-high four blocks, accounting for half of Western's total.
