CARLETON TAKES OUA TITLE
With yesterday’s OUA semi-final victories, the Ravens and U of T earned a spot in next weekend’s CIS Championship being held in P.E.I. The Ravens will play the host UPEI Panthers, while the Varsity Blues face the St. Mary’s Huskies.
Carleton created the first scoring opportunity when a ball was sent through the Blues defence with Adbullahi Abunafeesa running onto it but was stripped of the ball and fell to the ground but the referee waived the play on. In the 35th minute, Ravens midfielder Paul Waiganjo’s shot was deflected but Abunafeesa picked up the rebound slotting the ball past Blues keeper Luciano Lombardi.
U of T’s best scoring opportunity of the half came from third-year defender Alen Keri who received a ball in the box sent a blazing header on frame but Langford’s quick acrobatics denied the Blues attempt.
The wind picked up in the second half as well as well as the Blues offence with Sean Myers and Evan Milward trying to crack a sturdy Ravens defence. The Blues were unable to finish their scoring chances but Carleton took advantage of another loose ball when Paul Waijango knocked it past Lombardi to give the Ravens a 2-0 in the 56th minute.
U of T’s pressure intensified in the late stages of the game but the Raven’s defensive unit contained the Blues strikers. Toronto’s back line was missing first-year defender Dustin Chung, who was out of the lineup for a red card infraction in the semi-final.
Carleton’s head coach Sandy Mackie was happy with the win.
“They played well, but I think the difference is we got two chances, finished them, and our goalkeeper played pretty well,” said Mackie.
The Raven’s missed their top goal scorer Joshua Dewar-Morris, who was seriously injured in the semi-final against York. Morris broke his femur in the match.
WESTERN PICKS UP THE BRONZE
The Western Mustangs edged the York Lions 1-0 in Sunday’s bronze medal game. The game’s only goal came from first-year forward Kyle Washington who placed the ball past Lions keeper Greg Zatulovsky. The Lions had many opportunities but hit the crossbar twice and could not find a finishing touch.
