Gryphons Lindsey, Marauders Crapigna honoured as CIS Players of the Week

OTTAWA (CIS) – Guelph quarterback Jazz Lindsey, Manitoba defensive tackle David Onyemata and McMaster kicker Tyler Crapigna are the CIS football players of the week for the period ending on Oct. 18, 2014.

Lindsey, a fourth-year sociology student from Markham, Ont., was honoured on offence thanks to his record-setting performance in a thrilling 49-46 upset win over Western, Saturday in Guelph, a result that secured second place in the OUA standings and a bye in the first round of the playoffs for the Gryphons (6-1). The 6-foot-2, 193-pound senior completed 34 of 53 passes for 513 yards, four touchdowns and only one interception, setting single-game school marks for most passing yards and attempts. With his team trailing by eight points with just over three minutes remaining in the contest, Lindsey engineered back-to-back drives that resulted in a touchdown, a two-point convert and a 41-yard Daniel Ferraro field goal with 1.7 seconds left on the clock.

Quarterbacks Brandon Leyh of Mount Allison, Hugo Richard of Laval and Carson Williams of UBC were also up for the award.

Onyemata, a second-year extended education student originally from Lagos, Nigeria, took home the weekly honour on defence after he helped the Bisons shut down the Saskatchewan offence in a 41-8 home win, last Friday night in Winnipeg. The 6-foot-5, 310-pound sophomore created havoc throughout the contest and finished with 5.5 tackles, including one for a loss, as Manitoba held the nationally-ranked visitors to 49 rushing yards and 200 yards of total offence. The Huskies scored their only touchdown of the game with four minutes left in the fourth quarter.

Mount Allison linebacker Matt Montgomery, Laval linebacker Shayne Gauthier and Guelph defensive end Cam Walker were also nominated.

Crapigna, a fifth-year economics student from Nepean, Ont., was the choice on special teams after he entered the CIS and OUA record books in a 27-10 home victory against Laurier, Saturday in Hamilton. The 5-foot-7, 170-pound veteran was perfect on four field goal attempts on the day (29, 20, 18, 41), giving him 83 for his career – one more than the previous CIS mark – and 23 on the season – one more than the old OUA standard. Crapigna, a 2014 draft pick of the Calgary Stampeders and a multiple all-Canadian, has a shot at the single-season CIS record of 25 on Saturday when the No. 3 and OUA-leading Marauders (7-0) wrap up league play against Ottawa in the nation's capital.
