Banner Season: Queen’s gets a chance to repeat as OUA champions on Sunday against Trent
Waterloo, Ont. (C/O Dan Polischuk, Laurier Athletics) – The matchups are set for Sunday’s medal games at the OUA women’s lacrosse championship in Waterloo. The #3-seed Queen’s Gaels will get a chance to defend their conference title after defeating the #2-seed Guelph Gryphons handily in Saturday’s opening match. They will face the #1-seed Trent Excalibur, who took down the host Laurier Golden Hawks in convincing fashion.
The Golden Hawks and Gryphons will extend their Highway 7 rivalry to the bronze medal game, with Laurier looking to secure its first OUA medal since 2018. Western and Brock came away with wins to secure a spot in Sunday’s fifth-place game.
GAME 6:
#3 Queen’s 13
#2 Guelph 5
The Queen’s Gaels will get a chance to repeat as champions, advancing to Sunday’s gold medal game after rolling past the #2 seed Guelph Gryphons 13–5. Ruby Charney led the charge for Queen’s with a hat trick and an assist, while Tara Meikle also struck three times to pace the Gaels’ attack. Abby Lee chipped in a pair of goals as Queen’s pulled away in the third quarter, scoring six unanswered to put the game out of reach. The Gaels outshot Guelph 18–10 and held the Gryphons to just one goal per quarter after halftime.
Kiara McKelvey added two goals in the win, with singles from Summer Thomas, Taya Doree and Josie Clarke. Kassi Hogan scored twice for Guelph, while Maya Gazzola, Aimee Evans and Kennedy Peters also found the net for the Gryphons. The Gryphons will play in Sunday’s bronze medal game against Laurier.
GAME 7:
#5 Western 17
#6 Toronto 5
The Western Mustangs’ offence erupted Saturday as they powered past the Toronto Varsity Blues 17–5. Western’s Lexie Delisle continued her blistering start to the season with six goals and two assists, pacing a Mustangs attack that scored 10 times in the opening half and never looked back. Georgia Bordignon and Emma Bryan each added two goals, while Sage Snethun, Reese Wilkins, Abby McLeod and Kieran Goldthorp also found the net. The Mustangs dominated possession and outshot Toronto 22–10, holding the Blues scoreless in the fourth quarter to close out the win. Goaltender Tegan Lewis earned the victory in a full 60-minute performance. Rheanna Swanson led Toronto with four goals, while Vanessa Donaldson added the other in the loss. With the win, Western secured a spot in Sunday’s fifth-place game.
GAME 8:
#1 Trent 14
#4 Laurier 6
The Laurier Golden Hawks couldn’t keep pace with the Trent Excalibur, falling 14–6 to the tournament’s top seed. Laurier showed flashes of offensive strength — led by a hat trick performance from standout attacker Tori Nascimento — but Trent’s relentless scoring proved too much. The Excalibur built an early 2–0 lead and never trailed, striking four times in both the second and third quarters to pull away.
Riley Marwick, Madi Snyder and Jace Cormier also found the net for Laurier. Trent’s attack was led by Maddy Baxter and Abby Hiltz, who combined for nine goals. Tyler McDonald added a pair, and the Excalibur outshot the Hawks 22–14 in the win which sends them to the gold medal game on Friday against the defending champion Queen’s Gaels.
GAME 9:
#7 Brock 7
#8 McMaster 6
A late goal from Aisha Hoover completed a hat trick and lifted the Brock Badgers to a 7–6 win over the McMaster Marauders in another nailbiter game at the OUA championship. Hoover, who finished with three goals and an assist, scored the game-winner with 1:45 remaining in the fourth quarter to secure a spot for the Badgers in Sunday’s fifth-place game against Western. Abby Holliday and Olivia Dion each netted two goals for Brock as well.
McMaster mounted a strong push in the second half, led by two goals apiece from Morgan Randall and Alexandra Sheppard. Vanessa Winney also struck twice, keeping the Marauders within reach throughout as their championship came to an end.
GAME 10:
#9 Ontario Tech 11
#6 Toronto 8
A strong first-half surge helped the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks earn an upset win at the championship, defeating the Toronto Varsity Blues 11–8. Audrey Taylor and Olivia Toll led the way for the Ridgebacks with three and two goals respectively, combining for six points in the victory. Ontario Tech scored eight unanswered goals after falling behind 4–0 early, flipping the game in their favour by halftime.
Reese Peacock also chipped in with a hat trick, while goaltender Hunter Stolarek made several key stops to keep Toronto’s late push at bay. Toronto’s Isabella Ward recorded four goals and an assist in a strong outing, while Rheanna Swanson added two. Despite a spirited fourth quarter that saw the Blues score three times, Ontario Tech was able to secure the victory in the final game for both teams.
