Banner Season: Semifinals decided following opening day of tennis championships
Toronto, Ont. - The host York Lions were one of four teams to qualify for the OUA men's tennis championship's semifinal, earning a berth in the second round of the tournament after a win over the McMaster Marauders in the first game of the men's side. This came after a clean sweep, 7-0, in doubles and singles matches.
The Lions were not the only team to earn a sweep. They were then joined by the Waterloo Warriors, who posted similar results in their doubles matches with the Brock Badgers. They eliminated Brock with 8-2, 8-6, 8-2 wins followed by a sweep of the singles matches for a 7-0 win.
The final men's squad to advance to round two was the Toronto Varsity Blues, who advanced with a 7-0 win over the Ottawa Gee-Gees. The score did not reflect the closeness of some of the singles matches, however, with Toronto's William Xi defeating Ottawa's Jacob Leong playing line six, 7-6, 7-6. Nassan Yazdi also earned a tight win for Toronto playing on line one against Ottawa's Ethan Leong. He took the marquee matchup 6-2, 7-5.
The Warriors will face a tough test when they return to action Saturday. They face the No. 1 seed Western who had received a bye to the second round of the seven-team single elimination tournament. That matchup begins at 11 am.
Toronto will now clash with their regional rivals from York in the final matchup of the men's division, set for 1:30pm Saturday. Both teams will be seeking to avoid their first loss in both the singles and doubles divisions.
On the women's side, McMaster edged York in the first match of the day, narrowly advancing into the second round with a 4-3 victory over the hosts. The Lions earned one point after winning two of three doubles matches, but the Marauders won four of six singles matches to secure one more point.
Waterloo and Brock similarly had a tight contest, with Brock earning the doubles point but ultimately falling due to singles results. They took two matches to Waterloo's four, giving the Warriors the win and advancement into the second round.
After earning a bye in the men's division, the women's division saw the Western Mustangs enjoy a clear win, dispatching the Ottawa Gee-Gees 7-0 in the final matchup of the evening. They took all doubles matches and the six singles showdowns.
With McMaster's win over York, they are rewarded with a match-up against top seeded Toronto, set for Saturday at 12:00pm. Waterloo will then play Western in the final matchup of the day at 3:00pm.
