Semifinals are set after Day One at the OUA Tennis Championships
LONDON, Ont. – After the first day of competition at the OUA Tennis Championships, the semi-finals are now set with three men’s and three women’s teams all advancing to determine who will be playing for gold on Sunday.
LONDON, Ont. – After the first day of competition at the OUA Tennis Championships, the semi-finals are now set with three men's and three women's teams all advancing to determine who will be playing for gold on Sunday.
The Montreal Carabins were the most successful squad of the day, winning in both men's and women's competition to secure their spots in Saturday's semi-finals. Also advancing on the men's side were the Toronto Varsity Blues and the York Lions, while Waterloo and the host Western Mustangs won their matches to move on as well.
The Toronto and McMaster men's teams started off the day's action bright and early at 8:30 a.m. The No. 2 seeded Varsity Blues more than lived up to their billing, taking each of the three doubles matches and all six singles events for a clean sweep over the Marauders.
One of the closest matchups of the day was between Waterloo and York, with the fifth-seeded Lions edging out the No. 4 Warriors 4-3. The two teams split the six singles matches 3-3, with York taking the win thanks to claiming two of the three doubles matches.
Montreal and Carleton closed things out on the men's side on Friday, with the Carabins sweeping the Ravens 7-0 to move on to Saturday's semi-finals.
In the first women's matchup of the day, Montreal took care of the Carleton with a 6-1 win. Montreal won all three doubles matches and five of the six singles contests, with Carleton taking the win for the Ravens at the number one spot.
Waterloo and Toronto squared off in a hard-fought battle in the day's second matchup on the women's side, with the Warriors coming out on top by a 4-3 score. Both teams came out even in singles action with three wins apiece, however, the Warriors edged out their opponents in doubles to take the win.
The host Western Mustangs were in action in the day's final contest, squaring off with the McMaster Marauders. Western swept the doubles competition, and took five of the six singles matches to secure a 6-1 win and a spot in the semi-finals on Saturday.
Play resumes on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. with the first semi-final, and wraps up with the second women's semi-final at 6 p.m.
