St. Catharines, Ont. (c/o the McMaster Marauders) - Day one of the 2026 OUA Squash Championships delivered a strong opening statement, with Western and Waterloo emerging as the early teams to beat while the race for positioning tightened across the middle of the standings.
Women's Championship
Western sits alone in first after a flawless 2-0 start, winning 13 of 14 individual matches while posting a dominant 41-4 record in games and a 483-187 edge in total points. Waterloo followed closely in second, also finishing undefeated at 2-0 with 10 match victories and a +131 point differential.
Toronto, Queen’s, and Guelph each closed the day at 1-1, creating a crowded middle tier heading into Saturday’s action. McMaster also split its matches but currently holds sixth place with a 5-9 individual record, while Ottawa and Brock round out the standings at 0-2.
Western showcased its depth immediately, earning a 6-1 win over Queen’s before sweeping Ottawa 7-0 to cap the day. Across both ties, the Mustangs surrendered just a single match. Waterloo’s narrow 4-3 victory over Toronto proved to be one of the most competitive clashes of the tournament so far, highlighted by a decisive five-game triumph from Nitya Singh that secured the team result.
Toronto responded later with authority, blanking Guelph 7-0 behind a lineup-wide effort of straight-game victories. Queen’s delivered a similar performance, sweeping McMaster 7-0 to move back into contention.
Individually, several athletes remain unbeaten through two matches. Waterloo’s Niki Shemirani and Western standouts Caitlin Ng, Reese Maclean, Katie Boulanger, Sophie Pinfold, and Maddie Draayer all posted perfect 6-0 game records. Ng captured 74 percent of her points (66-23), while Boulanger led the group with an impressive 82 percent success rate.
With separation forming at the top and minimal margin through the middle of the table, day two promises heightened intensity as teams battle for playoff positioning and championship momentum.
Men's Championship
Day one of the OUA Men’s Squash Championship delivered a packed schedule of competition, with several teams emerging as early contenders while others battled to stay within striking distance in the standings.
Western established itself as the team to beat, finishing the opening day with a perfect 2-0 record. The Mustangs dominated individual play, compiling a 13-1 mark and winning 41 of 45 games, while also holding a significant advantage in total points. Waterloo matched Western’s unbeaten start, also sitting at 2-0 after convincing wins over Queen’s (6-1) and Brock (6-0).
A tightly contested middle tier quickly formed behind the leaders. Toronto, Queen’s, Guelph, and McMaster all concluded day one at 1-1, setting up an important second day where ladder positioning could shift dramatically. Ottawa and Brock round out the standings at 0-2 and will look to rebound as the tournament continues.
Several matches highlighted the depth across the conference. Waterloo’s Scott Holtshousen earned a hard-fought five-game victory over Queen’s Yawar Ashraf in a 52-minute battle, one of the longest contests of the day. Brock’s Tyson Schille also outlasted Ottawa’s Chris Kirollos in another five-game thriller that stretched to 47 minutes.
Team performances were equally decisive. Toronto swept Guelph 7-0 in a statement result, while Western mirrored that dominance with a 7-0 victory over McMaster. Earlier in the day, McMaster secured a 5-2 win against Guelph, demonstrating the parity present among the teams competing for the middle positions.
Through the first day, Western leads the championship with the strongest combination of individual match wins, games won, and total points, but Waterloo remains close behind as the only other undefeated program. With multiple teams separated by just a single result, the stage is set for a pivotal second day that will further clarify the race for the OUA banner.
