Nipissing 2 at Brock 3
ST. CATHARINES, Ont. – The Brock Badgers men's hockey team improved to 2-1-0 this season after taking down the Nipissing Lakers 3-2 in a spirited Thanksgiving affair. Goaltender Adrian Volpe powered the Badgers victory, making 33 saves for his first win of the campaign.
Volpe was tested early after a penalty shot was awarded to Connor O'Donnell, but the sophomore netminder stood tall at 5:06 of the first period. Minutes later, with Brock's Kevin Christmas in the penalty box, Matt Paton opened the scoring to give Nipissing the early edge.
C.J. Dickson responded for the Badgers later on in the period, tipping home an Andrew Radjenovic shot on the power play, with an assist also being credited to Matt Abercrombie.
It would be Abercrombie who next found his way into the goal column, scoring Brock's second of the game at 19:09 of the first to give his squad their first lead. Abercrombie's goal was also scored with the man-advantage.
After a penalty-filled second period (50 PIMs combined), and the clock ticking down for the second intermission, Nipissing's Grant Toulmin tied the score with four seconds left in the period.
Brock immediately looked to regain the momentum in the contest once the third period was under way, and it was KaineGeldart at 4:28 who scored the eventual game-winnner. Assisted by Abercrombie and Thomas Stajan, Geldart's goal was his first point of the season.
The Badgers sit in a tie for second place in the OUA West, and return to action next Saturday night at Queens University. Brock's next home game is Oct. 23 against the University of Toronto Varsity Blues at 7:15 p.m.

Concordia 2 at Guelph 3
Guelph, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphon men's hockey team came out with a win Saturday night against the Concordia Stingers with a final score of 3-2 at the Gryphon Centre. With the win the Gryphons move to 2-0-0 on the season.
Guelph started out the game evenly matched with the Concordia Stingers. They had the first power play of the game early on after a hooking call on Stingers player Alex MacDonald for hooking. Concordia was able to use their size and speed to kill the penalty. The only chance in the power play for Guelph came from Teal Burns after he circled the net looking for a shot at the post, but unfortunately the puck was snatched up by the goalie.
Concordia came back immediately after the power play and the first period continued with back and forth action. The Gryphons were able to get on the board first with a quick back handed goal in the crease by Nicklas Huard after a pass from James Merrett at 5:16, making it 1-0. Concordia came back quickly, picking up the pace. A quick shot to the corner by Taylor Lambke (Antigonish, N.S.) after a pass from Ben Dubois (Belle River, Ont.) and George Lovatsis (Markham, Ont.) had Concordia tying it up at 9:52. At 13:08, Concordia got their first power play of the game after Gryphon player Leonard Fabbri was called for hooking. Concordia had few shots on goal, but Guelph had a good chance after a breakaway by Burns, but the puck went off the post leaving it at 1-1 at the end of the first period.
Guelph started the second period strong with a goal by Ken Peroff 56 seconds into play. After the assist from Rob De Fulviis, Peroff fired it at the net where it was deflected off of a Concordia player's skate into the net, making it 2-1 for the Gryphons. It was back and forth until Nicklas Huard powered down the ice beating the Concordia defensemen. Two of his shots rebounded with James Merrett picking up the second rebound to take his own shot, but both could not beat the Concordia goaltender, Antoine Mastropietro (Montreal, Que.). Concordia had a few breakaways but were not able to beat our defensemen down the ice to the crease, keeping it at 2-1 going into the third period.
The third period started with a beautiful goal from the Gryphs Brett Appio 37 seconds into play. The pass from Nicklas Huard allowed Appio to power down the ice, beating the Concordia defensemen, making it 3-1 for the Gryphons. Concordia came back with a goal by Oliver Hinse (Sherbrooke, Que.) after beating our defensemen down the ice. The pass from Jessyco Bernard (Moncton, N.B.) and Alex MacDonald (Monton, N.B.) had Hinse in the perfect position to take on Gryphon goalie Keith Hamilton, making it 3-2. Concordia pulled their goalie for the final minute, but they were not able to beat goaltender Keith Hamilton.
The final score was 3-2 for the Gryphons. The shots on goal were in favour of the Gryphons with a total of 39-30.
The Gryphon men's hockey team hits the ice again on Oct. 18 at 7:30 p.m. against the LakeheadThunderwolves at home in the Gryphon Centre.

McGill 3 at Toronto 1
The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team fell 3-0 to the visiting McGill Redmen on Saturday, Oct. 12 at Varsity Arena.
The Blues are now 1-1-0 on the season after defeating the Ottawa Gee-Gees in their season opener Friday night.
Fourth-year goalie Garrett Sheehan (Cremona, Alta.) made 26 saves and was solid despite the loss, keeping the Blues in the game right to the final buzzer.
The Blues nearly opened the scoring midway through the first when Jeff Brown (Toronto) fired a pass cross-ice to team captain Blake Boddy (Scarborough, Ont.) who deftly deflected the puck on goal, but was robbed by McGill goaltender Andrew Flemming.
The missed opportunity came back to bite U of T later in the period, with the Redmen opening up a 1-0 lead with just four minutes remaining. Sheehan stopped the initial point shot from Neil Blunden, but the puck dropped behind him and lay on the goal line before it was swatted into the net by Max Le Sieur for his first of two goals on the night.
Sheehan was sharp in the second, making a number of glove saves, including one on David Rose in the slot, to keep Toronto within one.
U of T had numerous chances to tie the game in the third, the best coming when Tyler Turcotte (St. Catherines, Ont.) blasted a shot from the point with Brown on the doorstep, but the puck was swallowed up by Flemming without a rebound opportunity.
Then with just under four minutes remaining, McGill defenceman Ryan McKiernan fired a one-timer off a face-off win that beat Sheehan to the glove side to give the Redmen a two-goal lead.
Le Sieur would add an empty net goal to seal the 3-0 victory for McGill.
Redmen netminder Andrew Flemming made 37 saves for the shutout win. McGill is now 1-0-1 after opening their season with a 3-2 overtime loss to the Ryerson Rams Friday night.
The Blues next game is this Wednesday, Oct. 16 at home against the Ryerson Rams. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m.

Carleton 2 at Windsor 5
WINDSOR, Ont.- The Windsor Lancers men's hockey team rebounded from a disappointing performance in their home opener on Friday night, notching a 5-2 victory over the Carleton Ravens to split their weekend series at South Windsor Arena on Saturday night.
Captain Drew Palmer led the way with two goals and an assist, as the Lancers were able to bounce back from two one-goal deficits against a Ravens squad that lit up Windsor for eight goals the previous night. Both teams come away from the weekend with a 1-1-0 record.
The visitors struck first for the second-straight contest, as Michael Lomas took a feed from Owen Werthner to snipe the puck past a sliding Parker Van Buskirk. Palmer responded on the next shift, scoring just 33 seconds after Lomas' goal to even the game at 1-1.
After Carleton took a 2-1 lead into the first intermission, they would run into penalty trouble in the middle of the second stanza. Palmer tied the game up once again with his second marker of the evening on 5-on-3 power-play, and Evan Stibbard tallied his first of the season less than a minute later as Windsor took full advantage of the Ravens on special teams.
Josh Graves and Derek Lanoue would provide insurance markers in the third period to solidify the victory for Windsor. After a shaky opening night performance, Van Buskirk responded by stopping 31 of 33 shots to help spur the Lancers to victory. The Lancers were 2-of-6 on the man-advantage, while the Ravens connected on one of their nine power-play opportunities.
The Lancers will hit the road next weekend, travelling to Waterloo on Friday night and Laurier on Saturday for games against the Warriors and Golden Hawks respectively. Windsor will return home on Oct. 25 to start a four-game home stand, beginning with the rival Western Mustangs.

RMC 2 at Lakehead 5
The LakeheadThunderwolves beat the RMC Paladins 5-2 on Saturday night in front of 2132 fans at the Fort William Gardens in Thunder Bay.
The Wolves controlled the play early, and had some good scoring chances on Paladins’ goalie Evan Deviller.
Kelin Ainsworth snuck past the RMC defense and put a nice back-hander past Deviller to give Lakehead the early 1-0 lead at 6:33 of the first.
Lakehead was on the power-play for a significant portion of the opening period and found the post twice, but the Wolves were unable to increase their lead.
RMC evened things up at 5:23 of the second period when RMC defenseman Scott McDonald fired a floater from the point the bounced off Lakehead defenseman Mike Quesnele and past Justin McDonald.
Not long after, Lakehead regained the lead on a Keith Grondin wraparound. It was an unassisted marker.
Midway through the middle frame, Justin McDonald made some big saves for Lakehead as the Wolves killed off a 5-on-3 penalty. The strong net-minding paid off and Jake Carrick put Lakehead up 3-1 at 12:07 after he outworked the Paladin defense and took the puck hard to the net. Mike Hammond was credited with the lone assist.
At 13:01 of the third period Trevor Gamache put Lakehead up 4-1 on a nice effort, with the assists going to Chris De laLande and Luke Maw.
Scott Domenico pulled RMC to within two goals at 15:49 of the third, but the Lakehead win was sealed by a Trevor Gamache short-handed empty-netter in the final seconds, giving Lakehead the 5-2 win.
The Wolves will travel to Guelph next weekend for a two-game series with the Gryphons.

UQTR 3 at Western 5
LONDON, Ont. – Four assists from Daniel Erlich and two goals from Shaun Furlong powered the Western Mustangs men's hockey team to a come from behind 5-3 victory over the UQTR Patriotes on Saturday afternoon at the Thompson Arena.
"We got off to a slow start, but we just calmed down, went back to basics, and we got five unanswered goals and the win," said Erlich."It's great that we got the win out there and we got four points in the last two games. Obviously it's a strong start for us but we've got to keep it going."
The second-year forward had a hand in four of the Mustangs five goals and now has five points this season after only two games. Furlong led all Western scorers with two goals on the day, including the game winner early in the third period.
Also adding goals for the Mustangs were Steve Reese, Zach Harnden, and Adam Stoykewych.
Josh Unice picked up his second consecutive win in the Mustangs net, stopping 30 of 33 shots. Marc-Antoine Gelinas took the loss for UQTR, but put forth a stellar performance, turning aside 47 of Western's 52 shots.
Once again special teams were a major factor for the Mustangs, with two goals coming on the power play while killing off both of UQTR's opportunities with the man advantage.
The Patriotes opened the scoring a little over three minutes in as Tommy Tremblay slid a puck past Unice to give UQTR an early lead. After the early goal the two teams traded chances before the Mustangs began to take control midway through the frame, however it was UQTR who were able to score, picking up two goals in the final three minutes to make it 3-0 after the opening period.
Things tilted back in the Mustangs favour in the second, starting off with a power play goal from Reese at 7:31 off of a nice passing play by Erlich. The goal provided the purple and white with some much-needed momentum and the team took advantage of it, scoring two highlight reel goals off of the sticks of Furlong and Harnden to tie the game at three heading into the final period.
After scoring three goals in the second frame the Mustangs didn't wait long to add more as Furlong netted his second of the game to give Western its first lead of the game four minutes into the third. They'd extend that lead only 54 seconds later as Erlich froze the Patriotes goalie with a fake shot before sending the puck over to Stoykewych for the goal, eventually giving Western a 5-3 victory.
Following the game Mustangs head coach Clarke Singer was pleased with the way his team responded after a tough first period.
"I think it was a great character test for our guys," said Singer. "When it's 3-0 it can go either way; you can shut down or fight back. I was really happy that our guys chose to fight back. Trois-Rivieres is a very good team. We started slow and just kept chipping away at it, and we had everybody contribute to it. It was a nice finish to the day for sure."
The Mustangs have only one game on the schedule next week, heading down the 401 to take on the Toronto Varsity Blues on Friday, Oct. 18. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.

Queen’s 2 at Waterloo 3 OT
If you asked any hockey player with a pulse how they'd script their first goal on a new team in a new league, the most popular answer would invariably be to score a game winning goal in overtime. And luckily for the Warriors men's hockey team, forward Chris Chappell (Pickering) authored that scene Saturday night.
Chappell scored the overtime winner, and reigning CIS scoring champion Justin Larson (Buckhorn) had both Waterloo goals in regulation as the Warriors defeated the Queen's Gaels 3-2 in extra time on Saturday night at the Columbia Icefield Arena in Waterloo.
Andy Smith (Rosetown) had two assists in the win for the fifth-ranked Warriors, who move to a perfect 2-0 on the season. Joseph Luongo and Kelly Jackson scored for the Gaels, who dropped their first game of 2013-14. Newcomer Mike Morrison (Hamilton) made 36 saves for the Warriors in the win, while Kevin Bailie took the loss for the Gaels, turning aside 24 shots.
The first period saw the Warriors carry the bulk of the play, as they hemmed the Gaels in their own zone for long stretches without being able to pot one past Bailie. The second period was much the same story but with roles reversed, and Queen's took the play to the hosts, narrowly missing taking the lead. After 40 minutes, the game remained scoreless.
The early stages of the third period became Larson's show, as the burly forward ripped a wrister top corner just 51 seconds into the frame. Then, less than four minutes later, Larson picked the pocket of a Queen's defender at center ice and maintained control until he got to the goal mouth, beating Bailie with a quick move to the backhand to make it 2-0 Warriors.
The Gaels, to their credit, didn't wilt, and they were able to take advantage of a breakdown in the Warriors defensive zone when Luongo popped in from the point and buried a loose puck in the slot to cut the lead to 2-1 just after the period's five-minute mark. The score stayed that way until just under two minutes remained, when Jackson potted a rebound on a delayed penalty send the game to overtime.
Once in the extra session, it was Chappell's time to author his fairytale ending. Rookie defenceman Ryan Hanes (Kanata) fed him a gorgeous cross-ice pass to the back post, and Chappell made no mistake, finishing off the far post and in behind Bailie for the winner.
The Warriors will now prepare for a rare one-game week, as they will host a rematch of last year's OUA West division final when they welcome the Windsor Lancers to the Columbia Icefield Arena on Friday, Oct. 18. Puck drop is slated for 7:30 pm.
Notes: Both teams went 0-3 on the man-advantage…Warriors defenceman Sam Caldwell (Cape Breton) was hit hard into the boards late in the third period, and remained down for several minutes. He skated off under his own power…Hanes' assist on the game-winning goal was his first career CIS point.

Nipissing 2 at York 4
York University Lions men's hockey captain Jesse Messier's two-point performance and strong defensive play helped lift the squad to victory Saturday (Oct. 12), downing the Nipissing Lakers on home ice by a score of 4-2.
Messier (Keswick, Ont.) notched one goal, his third of the season, as well as an assist in the game and is now tied with two other players, including teammate Michael Lombardi (Richmond Hill, Ont.) for the early lead in the OUA scoring race.
With the win, the Lions remain a perfect 3-0-0 on the season and are one of six teams in the OUA West Division with an unblemished record to start the year.
The Lions came out firing on all cylinders, suffocating the Lakers from the first drop of the puck. Their relentless pressure had Nipissing pinned deep for the majority of the first period and they accumulated 20 of their 40 total shots on goal in the opening frame.
The constant bombardment eventually opened the door for defenceman Tyler Mort (Keswick, Ont.) to fire a shot from the point, which was tipped by Michael Santini (Woodbridge, Ont.) in front of the net for York's first goal. The Lions would take the 1-0 lead into the intermission.
Returning from the break, the Lions continued their assault. Capitalizing on Nipissing's missteps, Lombardi flew by the Lakers defence along with two teammates for a three-man advantage on the rush. Lombardi would find Troy Barss(Barrie, Ont.), who immediately dished it to Messier for a beautiful tic-tac-toe goal, going up 2-0.
Starting on the power play late in the second period after coming off of a 4-on-4 situation, Messier found Barss in front of the Lakers net for a beautiful one-timer goal that gave the Lions a three-goal lead.
Nipissing would respond quickly however, as Kevin Rebelo (Hamilton, Ont.) broke the Lions' shutout with a slap shot from the top of the circle for a goal, cutting the lead to 3-1 after two periods.
The third period would see York shift to a more defensive playing style as they sat on a two-point advantage. The game plan worked until a late penalty allowed Nipissing's Grant Toulmin (Langley, B.C.) to shrink the lead to one with a top-shelf backhanded goal of his own.
However, as time elapsed and the Lakers were forced to pull their goalie, Jordan Forfar (Sutton, Ont.) added an empty net goal to seal the victory
Goaltender Andrew Perugini (King City) had a stellar day between the pipes, stopping 26 of 28 shots for his third win of the season. Counterpart Kirk Rafuse (Kentville, N.S.) was even busier at his end of the ice, making 36 saves in the loss.
The Lions will travel to Kingston, Ont., on Friday (Oct. 18) to face the Queen's Gaels at 7:30 p.m. in their next contest. The team will return to Canlan Ice Sports on Thursday, Oct. 24 when they host the Waterloo Warriors at 7 p.m.

Ottawa 2 at Toronto 3
Fourth-year forward Michael Markovic scored two goals in leading the Varsity Blues men's hockey team to a 3-2 win over the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Friday night (Oct. 11) at Varsity Arena.
The season-opening win was certainly a positive won for the Blues, who fell to the Gee-Gees in East quarter-final action last season.
Markovic (Toronto) opened the scoring 5:38 into the game as he wired a shot over Ottawa goalie Harrison May's blocker. U of T held the 1-0 lead after the first period.

Third-year netminder Brett Willows (Rivers, Man.) was solid between the pipes, making 32 saves in the win.

McGill 2 at Ryerson 3 OT
TORONTO - Domenic Alberga’s regular season OUA debut could not have gone any better.
At 3:52 of the overtime period, Alberga (Maple, Ont.) forced a turnover at the McGill Redmen blueline, went in on a breakaway and made no mistake on goaltender Andrew Flemming. Alberga’s goal helped the Ryerson Rams win their home opener at the Mattamy Athletic Centre with a 3-2 win. Alberga’s overtime goal was his second of the game and capped off a three-point performance.
For over two periods the two teams went back and forth, exchanging several scoring chances. The first period saw the most action as Alberga got the Mattamy Athletic Centre pumping just two minutes into the game, scoring his first goal with assists by Jamie Wise (Stouffville, Ont.) and Daniel Lombardi (Richmond Hill, Ont.). McGill’s Mathieu Pompei replied back just 25 seconds later to even the game at one goal a piece.
Later in the period, Wise, playing in his first full season at Ryerson, scored his first of the year from Lombardi and Alberga. Just like after the Rams first goal, the Redmen came right back on the power play this time. Carl Gelinas got one past Rams starting goaltender Troy Passingham (Mississauga, Ont.) on the blocker side and the two teams skated into the first intermission tied at two.
Passingham, starting in his third straight home opener for Ryerson, got the win in net. He turned away 26 pucks, including making a desperation save during the overtime.
Ryerson struggled on the power play against McGill. They were unable to score on six chances.
NOTES:
- Ryerson’s last home opener win was back on Oct. 8, 2011 against the RMC Paladins. The Rams won the game 4-3 at George Bell Arena.

UQTR 3 at Guelph 5
Guelph, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphons men's hockey team came away with a win against the UQTR Patriotes with a final score of 5-3 at home at the Gryphon Centre on Friday night.
Nicklas Huard led the offense with a hat trick in the win. The Gryphons led the shots on goal with a total of 30, with UQTR following close behind with 29.
The first period started with back and forth action as the Patriotes and the Gryphons were evenly matched in terms of speed and physicality. The Gryphons were the first on board with a breakaway goal by Nicklas Huard with Rob De Fulviis on the assist. Huard put his shot up in the corner of the net to make it 1-0 four minutes into the game. UQTR put themselves up on the board shortly after with a goal by Keven Robert (St-Remi, Que). Patriotes player Tommy Tremblay (La Tuque, Que) would hit the corner of the net at 18:33, just out of the reach of Gryphon's goaltender Christopher McDougall, making 2-1.
The second quarter started out strong with the Gryphons scoring their second goal of the night. A quick shot by Brett Appio, after a pass from Teal Burns, had the puck flying past UQTR defensemen finding the corner of the net, making it 2-2. After a high sticking penalty on Gryphon's player James Merrett, UQTR went into their second power play of the second quarter. The Gryphons did a good job to kill the penalty, but ultimately it was the goaltending skills of Keith Hamilton, who entered the game at the start of the second period, that kept UQTR from scoring.
However, at the 10:46 mark UQTR player Cowan Austrie (Queens, New York) scored for the Patriots making it 3-2 against the Gryphons. A fight broke out shortly after, which put Guelph on a power play when the Patriots found two of their players in the box for kneeing and roughing, but Guelph had only one player in for roughing. In the same minute, Patriot player Guillaume Nadeau (St-Charles de Bellechasse, Que) had a penalty for slashing which gave the Gryphons a two-man advantage. After a close shot, the Gryphons passed the puck back up to the red line to find Nicklas Huard who slapped it in for his second goal of the night at 14:40, making it 3-3.
The Gryphons scored another goal only two minutes later while still having a one-man advantage. An assist from James Merrett had Cameron Odam making it 4-3 for the Gryphons. While still on the power play Nicklas Huard scored his third goal of the night with Kenneth Peroff and Nicholas Trecapelli, completing the hat trick and making it 5-3 for the Gryphons.
UQTR started out the third period on a power play with two Guelph players in the box for unsportsmanlike conduct and holding. Guelph did a good job to prevent any goals once again and kill the penalty. UQTR ramped up the intensity with more shots on goal, but the Gryphons upped the physicality preventing any more goals from going in for the remainder of play, with a final score of 5-3.
The Gryphons hit the ice again Oct.12 at 7:30 p.m. against the Concordia Stingers at the Gryphons Centre.

Carleton 8 at Windsor 1
WINDSOR, Ont.- The Windsor Lancers men's hockey team began their 2013-14 campaign in their new home at South Windsor Arena, but it was the Carleton Ravens who came away with a season opening 8-1 victory over the Lancers on Friday evening.
After an even-played first 15 minutes to the contest, the visitors opened the scoring at the 17:07 mark of the opening period to take a 1-0 lead into the first intermission. The Ravens added a power-play marker early in the second, but the Lancers looked as though they might swing the momentum after answering back with MacAulay MacDonnell's first of the season less than a minute later, cutting the lead in half.
However, that was as close as Windsor would come to Carleton's lead, as they added three more in the period to take a stranglehold on the contest after 40 minutes of play, chasing Parker Van Buskirk from goal after allowing five goals on 29 shots. Rookie netminder Taylor Speed came in relief for the final period, allowing three goals on 13 shots.
Windsor was 0-for-3 on the power-play, while Carleton was 3-of-12 with the man advantage. Ryan Dube stopped 17 of 18 shots that came his way for the victory, while Van Buskirk takes the loss for Windsor.
The Lancers will look for a weekend split against the Ravens tomorrow evening back at South Windsor Arena. Puck-drop is set for 7:30 p.m.

RMC 2 at Lakehead 5
Led by freshman Matt Kaarela’s 3 goals, the LakeheadThunderwolves beat the RMC Paladins 5-2 Friday night in front of 2772 fans at the Fort William Gardens in the OUA regular season opener.
The Wolves controlled the play early on putting every puck they could on RMC goaltender Paul Dorsey.
Lakehead scored first on Kelin Ainsworth’s first goal as a Thunderwolf, when he banged home a loose puck after a hard point shot from Nathan Bruyere. The other assist went to Andrew Wilkins.
Kaarela increased Lakehead’s lead to 2-0 at 16:39 of the first on a nice behind the net feed from Keith Grondin.
The Wolves could have had a couple more goals in the opening frame but Dorsey stood tall in net for the Paladins, robbing both Mike Hammond and Kaarela in tight.
Lakehead took a 3-0 lead early in the second when Hammond deposited the rebound after Ainsworth took the puck hard to the net.
RMC made it a game when Kyle Phillips snuck past the Lakehead defense and slipped the puck past Lakehead netminder Justin McDonald. The Paladins then got to within one at 4:11 of the second on a bad angle goal from Eric Louis-Seize.
Kaarela put Lakehead up 4-2 by scoring his second of the game on a quick shot from the slot. The assist on the goal was credited to Ryan Magill.

Concordia 2 at Western 3
LONDON, Ont. - Matt Clarke provided the late game heroics, scoring the game-winning goal in overtime, to lift the Western Mustangs to a 3-2 win over the Concordia Stingers in their regular season debut on Friday night at Thompson Arena.
"You're going to have some ugly wins and they're a whole lot better than ugly losses," said Mustangs head coach Clarke Singer following the game. "We're certainly not in the column of an ugly loss tonight. Great battle by Concordia, I thought they played very, very well, they played a great road game."
Special teams were the story of the night as a string of penalties during the first two periods put the Mustangs penalty killers to the test, facing five Concordia power plays before Western was given a man advantage of their own. Overall the Stingers went 1-6 on the power play while the Mustangs converted one of their three opportunities.
"There are games when things aren't going your way, you've got to find ways to win," said Matt Clarke. "It's not always going to be pretty. If you learn how to win ugly right away it can go a long way."
The London native certainly found a way to win in overtime, taking advantage of a penalty to Concordia's Youssef Kabbaj and firing a shot from the high slot through a crowd in front of the net to get Western's season started off with a win.
Josh Unice stopped 42 shots in the victory while Antonio Mastropietro turned away 39 shots for the Stingers.
Neither team was able to gain much of an advantage throughout the majority of the opening period until Stefan Salituro was able to notch his first goal in a Mustangs uniform, blasting a shot from the slot past Mastropietro to make it 1-0 for Western.
The Mustangs didn't wait long to extend their lead following intermission, scoring only 1:43 into the second period as a rebound from a Zach Harnden shot bounced off the skate of a Concordia defender and into the open net. A penalty shot for Clarke midway through the period gave Western an excellent chance to extend the lead, however he was denied by Mastropietro to keep the game at 2-0.
Just over a minute later Concordia notched their first goal of the game, cutting the lead to 2-1 off of a goal from DanyPotvin. Despite some excellent opportunities for both sides in the second half of the frame both netminders kept it a one-goal game.
Similar to the opening 20 minutes neither team was able to get onto the scoreboard in the third until the latter stages of the frame. After the Mustangs successfully killed off five Concordia power plays through the first two periods the Stingers finally proved successful with the man advantage, scoring on a slap shot off the draw to tie the game at 2-2 with only 3:28 left, eventually sending the game to overtime.
It would be the Mustangs taking advantage of the power play in the extra period, however, as Clarke netted the winner at 3:06 off of assists from Kyle De Coste and Daniel Erlich.
The Mustangs don't have long to rest as they return to the ice on Saturday, October 12 for a tilt with the UQTR Patriotes. Game time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. and fans can watch live across the globe on Mustangs TV.
