Banner Season: Hawks soar to 10th women's curling title in program history
Waterloo, Ont. (via Waterloo Warriors) - The Waterloo Warriors played host to the OUA Women's Curling Championship over the weekend at the Westmount Golf and Country Club with a dream matchup unfolding in the gold medal matchup as the Laurier Golden Hawks and Warriors met in a Battle of Waterloo for gold. Laurier would survive a back-and-forth matchup earning a single in an extra end to defeat the Warriors 5-4 and earn their 10th OUA Championship in team history.
Laurier went 6-1 in the championship with their only loss coming to Trent by a score of 2-1 in pool play. The Hawks easily defeated Ryerson and Carleton in the quarter and semifinal matchups to earn their spot in the championship game against the Warriors who matched Laurier's pool play record of 3-1 and defeated McMaster (9-4) and Brock (8-2) in the quarter and semifinal games.
Not much separated Waterloo and Laurier in the gold medal match as both skips fought for control. With the score 4-2 in favour of the Hawks in the seventh end, Warriors skip Katie Ford threw her final rock up against three Laurier stones and made a perfect tap back to secure the single making it a one-point deficit into the eighth and final end.
In the final end, Ford again made a nice shot around her own guards forcing Laurier skip Isabelle Ladouceur into a tough knockout. Ladouceur would miss the shot giving Waterloo the steal of one to send the game into an extra end with the score tied at 4's. In the extra, Ladouceur again had a similar shot, this time making it to give her Golden Hawks squad the 5-4 win and the OUA gold medal.
Earning the OUA bronze was Carleton who defeated the Brock Badgers 6-3 in the third-place game. The Ravens also went 3-1 in pool play and got past Laurentian who was the only team to go a perfect 4-0 in their pool, by a close score of 4-2. After falling to Laurier 4-1 in the semifinals, the Ravens bounced back with a solid performance in the bronze medal game.
Congratulations to all teams on a very successful OUA Championship and to the Laurier Golden Hawks for claiming the OUA Championship Banner.
