Banner Season: Lions and Marauders make OUA history on day 2 of the OUA championship
Toronto, Ont. (C/O Toronto Varsity Blues) - On a historic Day 2 of the 2026 OUA Badminton Championship, semifinal matchups have been set as the Toronto Varsity Blues will face the York Lions and the Western Mustangs will take on the Waterloo Warriors.
In a quarter-final showdown between the Lions and McMaster Marauders, OUA history was made. After the tie was tied at five and all tiebreakers were exercised, a women's singles match was set to decide who would advance to the semifinal. Coming up clutch for her team was Sophia Nong, who defeated Cindy Zhao in a historic victory.
"I'm so proud of our team, that was a tough fight so huge congrats to McMaster," said Nong. "We just made history with this first ever overtime game. I'm proud to be a part of it."
The Lions are now set for a rematch of the 2025 OUA semifinal against U of T, who are coming off of a quarter-final bye after three consecutive 9-1 wins in Pool A.
Meanwhile on the other side of the bracket, the Waterloo Warriors earned a quarter-final bye and will take on the Western Mustangs. "This matchup says a lot about both schools," said Mustangs head coach Jasper Tang. "It's a match we always look forward two as both teams worked hard to get here."
Western punched their ticket to the semifinal following a 6-0 victory over the Ottawa Gee-Gees that saw Maxwell Peng pick up wins in singles and doubles contests. Meanwhile, Christina Lin was impressive in her singles victory, winning her match by scores of 21-8 and 21-2 respectively.
Day 3 of the 2026 OUA Badminton Championship is set to begin on Sunday (Mar. 8) morning at the U of T Athletic Centre at 9 a.m. Semifinal matchups are set and a try between the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks and TMU Bold was determine the winner of the consolation bracket.
