The defending CIS champion cross country Gryphons didn't miss a beat from last year, opening up the 2014 season with a men's and women's team gold at the annual Vic Matthews New Balance Open at the Guelph Arboretum on Saturday.
The Gryphons swept the team titles and individual titles. On the women's side the Gryphons filled the top six places in the six-kilometre race while on the men's side the Gryphons earned the top three spots in the 10-kilometre race.
Heather Petrick won the women's race in a time of 20:42.6. She was followed by five of her teammates. Rounding out the top three was Katelyn Ayers and Katrina Allison.
On the men's side, last year's OUA and CIS rookie of the year Tristane Woodfine won the overall title with a time of 31:27.3. He was followed closely by teammates Yves Sikubwabo and Ross Proudfoot.
