York University Lions wrestler Shady El-Nahas won the gold medal in the 100kg weight class at the International Masters Bremen competition in Bremen, Germany.
El-Nahas, of Toronto, went 5-0 at the tournament en route to the gold medal. He won three preliminary round matches and then defeated France's Mohamed Rouahi in the semis. In the final, he took out Mathias Madsen from Denmark to reach the top of the podium.
El-Nahas and fellow Canadian Gabriel Juteau, who captured the gold medal in the 66kg weight class, became the first Canadians in 10 years to win a title at the prestigious event.
Earlier this season, he won the bronze medal in the same weight class at the Open Vise in Belgium.
As a rookie this season, El-Nahas dominated his opponents in OUA competition. He went 23-1 in the regular season with 19 pins and won four medals. He was the champion at events at Concordia, McMaster and York, and he also won the bronze at an international Guelph Open event. He also was crowned the Ontario champion at the junior and senior provincial championships.
