HAMILTON, Ont. – Representatives from the OUA swimming championship teams have been named Pioneer Petroleums Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Athletes of the Week for the period ending February 13, 2011.
Each Pioneer Petroleums OUA Athlete of the Week will receive a $25 gift card and a dri-fit T-shirt, courtesy of Pioneer Petroleums.
MALE:Zack Chetrat, Toronto Varsity Blues, Swimming
Zack Chetrat broke three individual records and anchored a record-breaking relay en route to four gold medals to lead the Varsity Blues to their eighth consecutive title at the 2011 OUA swimming championships. The Oakville, Ont. native opened the three-day meet by breaking a 21-year-old record in the men’s 400m freestyle in a time of 3:51.59 and went on to better his own previous record by over a second in the 200m butterfly (1:59.25). The third-year economics and political science student broke his third individual OUA record when he topped Brad Vanderkamp’s 2004 mark (53.89) with a time of 53.86 seconds in the men’s 100m butterfly on Saturday. Chetrat was also an integral member of Toronto’s record-breaking 800m freestyle relay team, who finished with a time of 7:27.15. He placed fifth in the men’s 200 backstroke.
FEMALE: Hayley Nell, Western Mustangs, Swimming
Hayley Nell was honoured with the OUA Award of Distinction as she helped lead the Mustangs to their third consecutive OUA Championship in women's swimming. Over the three-day meet, Nell won four gold and two silver medals. She won the 50m, 100m and 200m freestyle and was the anchor in the gold-winning women's 400m freestyle relay. The London, Ont. native won silver in the 400m freestyle and as a member of the 400m medley relay team.
