WATERLOO, Ont. - The University of Guelph swimming team competed in a quad meet this past weekend, hosted by Laurier on Saturday. The Gryphons competed against Laurier, McMaster, York and Laurentian.

It was a great date on the OUA calendar for the Gryphons to race in their non-core events, and for others to put into place final tactical race strategies before the OUA championship at Brock on Feb. 4-7.

The men's relays were strong as they have been all season, even with two key injuries including Scott Van Doormaal (Guelph, Ont.) and Patrick McBride (Elora, Ont.) who’ve recently both suffered a broken foot.

The men's 4x50m freestyle and 4x50m medley relay, won handily against the strong McMaster team. Other top finishes on the day for the men's team included Wil Wright (Mississauga, Ont.) winning the 100m breaststroke by 10 seconds and Ben Roberts (Kingston, Ont.) winning the 100m IM.

On the women's side the relays were third in the medley relay and second in the freestyle relay. Chantique Payne (Brantford, Ont.) led the team once again winning the 100m IM.

This past week four Gryphons were rewarded for their hard work by getting Ontario Quest for gold scholarships including Bethany Flemington, Payne, Wright and Matthew Stephenson.

Andrew Ford and Flemington took the weekend off as they leave for Zurich for an international meet this Tuesday.
