Marauder women shock Gee-Gees, Ottawa and McMaster advance to men's semifinals

Hamilton, ON -- On a night that otherwise went to form, the McMaster Marauders women's team provided the early shock of the OUA Water Polo Championships on Friday, edging the no. 2 seed Ottawa 13-11 to guarantee the hosts at least silver.

After staking themselves to a 6-1 lead at the end of the first quarter, the Marauders saw their opponents steadily eat away at their advantage, and had only a two-goal cushion after three quarters at 11-9. But stout defence and timely goaltending ensured that McMaster will battle for their first OUA title since 2001 in their home pool.

The fourth-seeded Carleton Ravens will also have a shot at the women's title, although they will need to go through the top-ranked Toronto Varsity Blues to get it, after winning the opening game of the tournament 6-3 over the Queen's Gaels.

Seeding prevailed on the men's side of the draw Friday, where the no. 3 Gee Gees defeated the no. 6 Western Mustangs 18-12, and the no. 4 Marauders thumped the no. 5 Gaels 16-3 to each book their respective places in Saturday's semifinals.

Those results set up a Saturday schedule that will open with the first women's bronze-medal pool game between the Queen's Gaels and Ottawa Gee Gees at 11:00 a.m. The women's semifinal between the top-seeded Toronto Varsity Blues and the no. 4 Carleton Ravens follows at 12:10 p.m., with the men's semifinal between no. 2 Carleton and no. 3 Ottawa at 1:20 p.m.

The hometown Marauder men launch the second semifinal against the top-seeded Blues at 2:30 p.m., before the Ottawa women bring the marathon day to a close with the second bronze-medal pool game against the loser of the morning game at 5:45 p.m.
