OUA ANNOUNCES 2008 MEN'S RUGBY MAJOR AWARD WINNERS AND ALL-STARS

HAMILTON, Ont. – Ontario University Athletics (OUA) is pleased to announce the 2008 men's rugby major award winner and All-Stars.

The Guelph Gryphons (4-2-1) started the season undefeated, winning four straight games in the month of September. This feat earns Gryphons head coach Darrell Devine the title of OUA West Coach of the Year.

West Rookie of the Year is awarded to Richard Lebel (Waterloo, Ont.) of the Waterloo Warriors. Lebel played in all seven regular season games and had a team high six tries and seven converts.

David Jacks (Tottenham, Ont.) of the Western Mustangs is the OUA West Most All-Round Player for a second straight year. Jacks had three tries this season good for 15 points.

Keegan Selby (Lindsay, Ont.) from the McMaster Marauders is this year's OUA West Most Valuable Player. Selby lead McMaster with seven tries, ranking him second in Ontario. This is Selby's second straight year winning this award.

Joining Selby is joined on the West All-Star list by teammates Andy Holwerda (Brantford, Ont.), Kevin Noble (Dundas, Ont.), Mike Scholz (Oakville, Ont.), Joel Waldock (Tottenham, Ont.) and Shawn Windsor (Stoney Creek, Ont.) of the McMaster Marauders. Colin Brown (Toronto, Ont.), Kevin Feheley (Whitby, Ont.), Zach Wittenburg (Vancouver, B.C.), and Zack Myers (Vancouver, B.C.) join Jacks from the Western Mustangs. Sean Gowland (Toronto, Ont.), Thomas Sobotka (Mississauga, Ont.), C. Leonard (Toronto, Ont.) and Kyle Binkley (Barrie, Ont.) receive the provincial nod for the Guelph Gryphons. Zach Bentley (Napanee, Ont.), Nick Wray (Victoria, B.C.) and Mark Goody (Napanee, Ont.) are honoured from the Waterloo Warriors. The Laurier Golden Hawks add Jeff Cooper (Ramona, Ont.) and Steve Williams (Vancouver, B.C.). Steve Young (Oil City, Ont.) and Kevin Mageto (Mississauga, Ont.) round off the West list from the Windsor Lancers.

The Queen's Gaels dominate the major award category for the East Division, with three honours. Gaels' head coach Peter Huigenbos is named the OUA East Coach of the Year. Huigenbos led Queen's to an undefeated season, finishing 5-0-1 improving on last year's amazing 5-1-0 record.

Alistair Clark (Oakville, Ont.) is named the OUA East Most Valuable Player. Clark finished the regular season with seven tries, good for second in the league and 35 points.

Rookie of the Year is also awarded to a Gael. Scott Kyle (Singapore) receives the title. Kyle scored two tries in this four games placed with the Gaels this season.

Ray Barkwill (Niagara Falls, Ont.) is named the OUA East Most All-Round Player. A strong force both offensively and defensively, Barkwill contributed to Brock's championship in 2007, and looks to take bronze in the OUA Men's Rugby Championship on Nov. 8.

Joining Clark on the East All-Star team from the Queen's Gaels are Tom Binczyk (Victoria, B.C.), Pat Richardson (Victoria, B.C.), Tim Richardson (Victoria, B.C.), Graeme Dibden (Edmonton, Alta.) and Zach Pancer (Unionville, Ont.). Rory McDonell (Brantford, Ont.), Levon Kvas-Rothwell (St. Catharines, Ont.), Tom Clancy (Lindsay, Ont.), Mike Berry (Trenton, Ont.), and Hugh McDonell (Brantford, Ont.) from the Brock Badgers are named All-Stars. Royal Military College adds four to the list with Matthew McLeod (Lindsay, Ont.), Ben Strocel (Victoria, B.C.), Josh Whiteside (Bracebridge, Ont.) and Brent McIntyre (Orleans, Ont.). Benny Mak (Hong Kong), William Sinclair (Toronto, Ont.) and Sabin Minteanu (Toronto, Ont.) receive the All-OUA nod from the Toronto Varsity Blues. Kevin MacLean (Diego Martin, Port of Spain) and Chi Hang Liu (Waterford, Ont.) from the Trent Excalibur round off the East list.
