Malone, McQuilkin, Domagala named OUA Football Players of the Week

BURLINGTON, Ont. - The following athletes have been named Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Football Players of the Week for the period ending October 5th, 2015.

OFFENCE: Alex Malone (Toronto, Ont) – 2nd yr. – Toronto

Alex Malone was an absolute workhorse for the University of Toronto Varsity Blues on Friday night, as they topped their rivals, the York Lions in the annual Red & Blue Bowl by a score of 40-3.

The second-year Kinesiology student-athlete carried the ball an astounding 31 times collecting 257 yards on the ground while adding one touchdown.

The 5'7" 185 lbs running back totaled an incredible 10 yards per carry, which was highlighted by a 59 yard run in the second quarter, and a three yard smash into the end zone early in the fourth quarter.

The win keeps Toronto in the playoff conversation with a record of 2-3, as they host Western on a short week Thursday night. The game starts at 7pm.

DEFENCE: Luke McQuilkin (Burlington, Ont.) – 4th yr. – Queen's

Luke McQuilkin (Burlington, Ont.) was a crucial part of the Gaels massive 23-15 upset over the previously undefeated Guelph Gryphons this weekend.

The 6'0" 233 lbs linebacker had five total tackles and one interception for 15 yards. The interception came in spectacular fashion, as the Gryphons were marching down the field looking for endzone.

The fourth-year Commerce student-athlete picked off Guelph’s James Roberts in the endzone to halt the Gryphons drive, and then returned the pick 15 yards, taking it out of the endzone and setting up the Gaels offence on the five-yard line.

McQuilkin made another goal-line stop in the third-quarter, taking down Guelph running back Johnny Augustine for a one-yard loss on second and goal, forcing Guelph to go for it on third down. The Gryphons were unable to connect on the pass, turning the ball over for a second time in the Gaels red zone.

Queen’s will look to take this momentum and carry it into their next game as they head to Toronto to take on York. Kick-off is slated for Saturday Oct. 17th at 1pm.

SPECIAL TEAMS: Michael Domagala (St. Catharines, Ont.) – 3rd yr. – Carleton

Michael Domagala takes home OUA Special Teams Player of the Week honours after helping the Ravens to a 48-45 double-overtime victory over their cross-town rivals, the Ottawa Gee-Gees, in the annual Panda Game matchup.

Domagala kicked a 17 yard game winning field goal in the second overtime to bring Pedro the Panda back to Carleton for the second year in a row.

The third-year Criminology and Criminal Justice student-athlete contributed 16 points total in the win over the Gee-Gees. Domagala hit four of his five field goal attempts on the day, connecting from as far as 43 yards away.

The 5'9" 165 lbs kicker also averaged 37 yards on his five punts while pinning Ottawa inside their own 20 once. Domagala leads OUA in field goal efficiency, having connected on 13 of 15 attempts this season, while leading the Ravens in scoring with 66 points.

The Ravens will host the York Lions this Friday as they look to collect another W and stay in the playoff hunt. Kickoff is set for 7pm at MNP Park in Ottawa, Ont.
