BURLINGTON, Ont. – Ontario University Athletics (OUA) is excited to welcome former Laurier Golden Hawk receiver Shamawd Chambers and former Western Mustang offensive lineman Sean Jamieson as honourary captains for the 110th Yates Cup this Saturday.
Representing the reigning Yates Cup champions as part of the CHCH broadcast will be a Grey Cup winning receiver, Shamawd Chambers. Chambers made his time in the purple and gold count before shifting gears into the CFL, earning OUA Second-Team All-Star honours three times and receiving the OUA Player of the Week nod five times.
After the Toronto, Ont. native’s four years at Laurier, he continued his playing career with the Edmonton Eskimos. His best year statistically with the Eskimos came in 2013, when he hauled in 42 receptions for 465 yards and 4 TDs. In his final season with Edmonton, Chambers, along with the rest of his Eskimos teammates, captured the 103rd Grey Cup, defeating the Ottawa Redblacks 26-20.
After a brief stint in Saskatchewan (2016), and then back to Edmonton at the beginning of 2017, Chambers has most recently joined the Hamilton Tiger-Cats roster. In his seven games with the Tabbies, Chambers tallied 28 receptions for 279 yards.
Joining Chambers will be fellow CFLer Sean Jamieson, who is just one year removed from his five year stint at Western. The returning Jamieson was a stalwart for the Mustangs on the line, even capping off his university playing career with the OUA Lineman of the Year Award in 2016.
Jamieson, who also served as a Mustangs captain, was a decorated player as part of a strong Western squad, earning First-Team All-Star nods in three consecutive seasons during his time in London, including All-Canadian recognition in those same three years. During his time at Western, Jamieson was known as one of the best run blockers and pass protectors that the OUA had to offer.
Upon departing Western, Jamieson was selected 20th overall by the Montreal Alouettes in the 2016 CFL Draft, but will be coming back to represent at his Alma mater for the 110th Yates Cup.
Not only will these two former OUA standouts be involved in the pre-game and half-time festivities, but they will also represent their respective teams at the coin toss.
For those who aren’t able to make it to the game on Saturday at TD Stadium in London, Ont., fans can catch all the action between the Golden Hawks and Mustangs live on CHCH or stream the game on OUA.tv.
