Guelph’s Ferraro sets CIS single-season field goal record

OTTAWA – Guelph kicker Daniel Ferraro and Laval quarterback Hugo Richard are the latest entries in the CIS football record book.

Ferraro, a fourth-year senior from Mississauga, Ont., was good on each of his three field goal attempts Saturday afternoon in the Gryphons' regular season finale -- a 41-36 win at Laurier -- to bring his 2014 total to 26, one more than the previous national mark set in 2008 by former Laval standout Christopher Milo, who now stars with the CFL's Saskatchewan Roughriders.

After splitting the uprights from 40 yards out in the opening quarter, Ferraro matched Milo's 2008 total in the second stanza with an 18-yarder and then set the new CIS standard 2:26 into the fourth thanks to a 42-yard kick.

McMaster's Tyler Crapigna, who last Saturday became the all-time CIS leader in career field goals with 83, also started the day with 23 on the season but settled for a single field goal in the Marauders' league finale at Ottawa – a 38-18 loss -- to finish with 24 in 2014 and 84 in his career. Crapigna scored four points against the Gee-Gees to end up in third place on the CIS career scoring list with 404.
Meanwhile, another single-season CIS record fell on Friday night in Montreal, where Richard resumed his sensational rookie campaign with a 379-yard, three-touchdown performance in a 53-14 win at McGill. With one game left on Laval's league schedule (next Saturday at Montreal), the native of St. Bruno, Que., has already racked up 2,440 passing yards this fall, eclipsing the previous CIS rookie standard of 2,383 set in 2011 by Sherbrooke's Jérémi Roch, who benefited from an extended nine-game RSEQ schedule that season.

Richard, who also set a new RSEQ mark for most TD passes in a season on Friday (22), had already shattered the CIS rookie record in that category last Sunday.

NOTE: In the Guelph-Laurier contest, Golden Hawks' running back Dillon Campbell added 203 rushing yards to his season total to finish league play with 1,458 yards on the ground, the sixth highest total in CIS history.
