Westernâ??s Greg Marshall named head coach of Canadian Senior National Football Team
Western Mustangs head coach Greg Marshall has added another position to his resume, as Football Canada has selected the Mustangs bench boss as head coach of the Canadian Men’s Senior National Team. Marshall will guide Team Canada at the International Federation of American Football (IFAF) Senior World Championship to be held in 2015 in Stockholm, Sweden.

Established in 1999 and held every four years, Canada first participated in the International Federation of American Football (IFAF) Senior World Championship in 2011, falling to Team USA in the gold medal game.

Marshall is a veteran of international football having served as Canada’s offensive coordinator at the 2011 [Men’s] Senior World Championship in Austria under legendary Mustangs coach Larry Haylor. Marshall has also served on the staff for the World Team in the International Bowl since the game’s inception in 2010, first as offensive line coach before taking over as head coach the following two years. In 2012, Marshall led the World Team to a 35-29 International Bowl victory which marked Team USA’s first defeat in international competition.

“I am excited to be back coaching with the Senior National program,” explained Marshall. “This is a great opportunity and challenge to select and prepare a team to represent our country internationally in the world championship.”

Marshall says that as Canada’s head coach his immediate priorities are two-fold.

“My first job is to select a coaching staff as soon as possible. In addition, we need to get the word out to all prospective players to begin now to prepare and train for a chance to represent Canada.”

Canada’s 2011 Senior World Championship roster included a number of past and current CFL players including Shamawd Chambers (Edmonton Eskimos), Michel-Pierre Pontbriand (Winnipeg Blue Bombers) and Jake Thomas (Winnipeg Blue Bombers), Matt Walter (Calgary Stampeders), and former Mustangs Matt Norman (BC Lions) and Lirim Hajrullahu (Winnipeg Blue Bombers) as well as former CFL standout Adriano Belli.

In addition to Hajrullahu and Norman, the 2011 Canadian roster also featured then-current or former Mustangs players Michael Faulds, Donnie Marshall, Zach Pollari, Josh Buttrill, and Matt Carapella.
