MALE: Justin Gideon (Pickering, Ont.) – 2nd yr. – Brock Badgers – Baseball
The winner of the 2014 OUA Top Hitter played a crucial role in the Brock Badgers capturing the school’s fourth ever OUA baseball championship this past weekend in Hamilton.
In three championship tournament games, Gideon went 5-for-11 at the plate, hitting a three-run home run in each of Brock’s first two games. He finished the weekend with seven runs batted in, a .455 batting average, and added an outfield assist on the defensive side. It capped an amazing season for both Gideon and the Badgers. Brock went 17-1 in OUA regular season play, thanks in large part to Gideon who led the league in runs, hits, and total bases.
FEMALE: Cindy Nelles (Belleville, Ont.) – 4th yr. – McMaster Marauders – Rugby
Nelles captained the CIS no. 2-ranked Marauders to a comfortable 24-10 semifinal win at home, clinching a home date in the OUA Championship and a berth in the CIS Championship tournament in the process. The eight-man was her team's leading scorer with 10 points from two tries, and coordinated a suffocating Marauder defence that held Western to just a single try and matched the Mustangs lowest point total of the season.
This is the second Athlete of the Week for Nelles who also won the award for the period ending September 15, 2014. Nelles and the Marauders will take on the Guelph Gryphons this Saturday, October 25th in OUA Women's Rugby Championship.
