BURLINGTON, Ont. – The following athletes have been named Investors Group Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Athletes of the Week, powered by 2XU, for the period ending October 10th, 2017.
Male Athlete of the Week – Gabriel Bitar (Ottawa, Ont.) – 1st Year – Carleton Ravens
Gabriel Bitar, a first-year striker for the No.4-ranked Ravens men's soccer team, had a prolific scoring weekend in Carleton's two victories over Queen's and RMC.
The 5-foot-9 talisman sniped both of Carleton's goals in a 2-0 shutout win over the visiting Gaels on October 7, before adding another two-goal tally in a 5-0 final against the Paladins. Bitar, a native of Ottawa, ON, scored two game-winning goals to grab a share of the conference lead with four on the campaign, and his 13 goals on the season ties him with teammate Stefan Karajovanovic at the top of the national scoring race.
Female Athlete of the Week – Sophie de Goede (Victoria, B.C.) – 1st Year – Queen’s Gaels
For the second time in the young player’s season, Sophie de Goede of the Queen’s women's rugby team is the OUA Female Athlete of the Week.
The rookie back row was an offensive force in the Gael’s 109-0 OUA quarterfinal victory over Trent on Friday night. de Goede scored four tries - tying the amount she scored during the OUA regular season – and three conversions for a total of 26 points.
Going into the OUA semifinals, the basketball dual-sport athlete stands second in the conference for scoring, with 60 points under her belt.
