BURLINGTON, Ont. – The following athletes have been named Investors Group Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Athletes of the Week, powered by 2XU, for the period ending December 5th, 2017.
Male Athlete of the Week – Ben Blasko (Kingston, Ont.) – 5th Year – UOIT Ridgebacks
UOIT men's hockey player Ben Blasko had himself quite a week in helping the Ridgebacks end their fall schedule on a high note.
Blasko, a criminology and justice studies student, started the weekend with a goal and an assist in the Ridgebacks 4-3 overtime victory over the UQTR Patriotes on Friday night. He scored the opening goal for UOIT, tying the game 1-1, before assisting on the game-tying goal with 1:53 to go in regulation. On Saturday, he assisted on all three goals in a 3-2 win over the Patriotes, the first time UOIT has swept the season series against UQTR in program history.
Blasko now sits 8th in the OUA in scoring with five goals and 15 assists on the season.
Female Athlete of the Week – Sofia Paska (Etobicoke, Ont.) – 4th Year – Ryerson Rams
Sofia Paska not only sparked her Ryerson Rams women’s basketball team to a pair of wins this week, but also achieved a personal milestone.
The fourth year forward etched her name into the Rams history books by surpassing the 1,000 point mark in her career. Paska is the sixth women's basketball player to do so at Ryerson.
Paska posted 23 points and 10 rebounds in both games this week, stretching her double-double streak to six straight games. At the holiday break Paska ranks second in OUA scoring (20.1 points per game) and fourth in rebounds (9.3 per game).
